Lights trouble

Hi guys,

My headlights, park lights and spot lights have all stopped working. I have a traxide wiring upgrade, no fuses are blown and all the earths are good. I had read that sometimes the indicator stalk switch can go and this may cause the lights to stop working, however my indicators still work. Could this be a cause of the issue. Also, when I switch on my headlights, only one of the relays in the fuse box switches (the relays are both fine, as I have switched them into the other looms to find out). Should both of these relays switch for the lights to go on? Could this be linked to the stalk?

Car is '96 110.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I take it your spots are in with the high beam for them not to be working?
Hows the light swich?
Had sort of the same problem with mine, but just the main beam (low) wouldnt come on....
its was late at night so had a short drive home with just side lights.
Next day looking over the problem found nothing wrong????
And the dipped beam was working again ;).
Could only be the head light switch im thinking

I replaced the switch about a year ago, the previous one was still working but I was trying to figure out why I was blowing fuses back then. I have tried the old one as well and neither of them work.

And yes, my spotlights are wired into the high beams.

Have you got one of those cheep testers , if so test the power to see if It at the switch " ignition on " if yes and It's not coming out the other side then It's the switch , there have to be one of the cheapest made switches on the market !!.. good luck ..Jim

In short no, it can't be the indicator switch. The indicator switch only effects the headlights, so if your park lights aren't working it's in the clear. Similarly all of your relays are downstream of the headlight switch. You haven't mentioned it, but I'm guessing that if your park lights aren't working the tails and gauge lights aren't working either.

The only options are the headlight switch, the big 30A fuse under the bonnet, or the wiring between.

Pull your headlight switch out and have a look. Maybe you weren't fast enough the wiring upgrade :P

Have you a test light with a probe? Super Cheap Auto's have these at a low price.

My Defender is about a year before yours and has a similar headlight and spotlight relay setup by the sounds of what you have, I built my own system and hasn't given any trouble. So the wiring, colours and their locations, should be near identical.

I also have a factory Defender 1996 electrical manual that can make following a problem wire easy to track.
