View Full Version : Rear Quarter Damage - Bar Protection Options?

So I bent my 110 rear quarter panel on a steep rock climb on the weekend. It's the exact same damage as I did on the 90 last year. It occured from a sharp departure angle so basically hit from below.
My question is what has anyone else done for protection around this area?

I know there's options like the bar below but I can't see them holding much weight when hit hard.

I'm going to get Mulgo rear bumperettes. Apparently there the only ones that fit without modification if you have a wheel carrier.
Mulgo Bumperette (pair) | Buy 4x4 Land Rover Toyota Nissan Accessories and Parts Online Store | Expedition Centre Australia by Mulgo (http://www.expeditioncentre.com.au/online-store/vehicle-protection/bumperettes-rear-end/mulgo-bumperette-pair-.html)
They come highly recommended on this forum.

We sell the Shadow brand, they are probably the best quality defender product on the market, and you can have a version for spare wheel carriers.
I don't have a 110, but i do have a 90 coming and I will be fitting a set of the Shadows.

Mine aren't specifically made for what caused your damage...mainly for sticks thrown up, roos & the odd reversing in scrub mishap. I used existing holes in the chassis rear & welded a bracket on the back of the steps. It really gets more use walking on for roof access, and resting stuff from the fridge on when looking for a beer.

I have the terra firma bumperettes. No rear wheel carrier on my vehicle.
Haven't had any big crunches to date, so as yet untested :)
I've already posted a photo in my thread about my vehicle "Agnes".

Can you provide some more information. When I posted earlier this year the only responses I received where in relation to Mulgo bumperettes fitting with the Rijidij rear wheel carrier.

Wow they look like a solid setup. I'm sure that would give good protection especially from the side. Have you connected the front to the chassis?

Found this photo of someone's protection panel. It's a QLD number plate, anyone on here? I'd like to see some close up photos.

No...the rear protection is forward attached to a bracket which is welded to the side step, which in turn is bolted to the chassis outriggers.

Max, I agree with you about the current protectors not coping with the damage you've sustained - you've smashed the rear cross member with quite some force so I can't see some small bumperettes helping too much. What ever you use needs to be designed so that if it flexes it isn't the cause of the damage. I make that comment because I've seen D3's that have hit the aftermarket rear bumper/ wheel carrier and it has flexed and cracked the rear light - so the bumperettes need to be really solid to handle your type of impacts. :)

Shadow Defender 110 Rear Corner Protectors (all models) Rear Wheel Carrier type. GALV (http://www.firstfour.co.uk/item/2176366/shadow-defender-110-rear-corner-protectors--all-models--rear-wheel-carrier-type--galv)
I have a Rijidij wheel carrier as well and I can't quite picture how these would fit. On the inside face of the rear cross member I'm guessing but from memory there is a plate sitting in there as part of the Rijidij install.
Only way to know for sure would be to buy a set and try them. Expensive book-ends if it doesn't work.
Might need to get onto Murray and see if he can come up with something similar designed to work with his wheel carrier. I reckon if they were offered as an optional extra with the wheel carriers plenty of people would buy them.

I've got bumperettes from Rovercraft so I think they're Britpart made. I installed them before buying a Rijidij wheel carrier and modified the right hand one to suit.
Shortened it by about 75mm and rewelded the bracket further out, drilled a couple of extra holes and got those nuts put in (can't remember their name but they're locked in!!) and it looks good.
The left hand bumperette saved my rear lights being squashed when I reversed into tree but it bent the brackets badly. Took it off and got a workshop to straighten them and it's back looking much the same as it first did.
Worth the money and a bit of time I think.
