View Full Version : Got myself another bike.

After agonizing over whether to get a 1500 or 1800 Goldwing I decided on the 1800. I started looking seriously at 2002-2005 models a couple of months ago. Yesterday a 1500 came onto evil-bay at a very keen price, so keen that I thought to myself "If it looks too good to be true......". Luckily it was very local to me so I went to look at it; I bought it on the spot.
I'm led to believe I'm not the only forum member to take delivery of a new bike today. ;)

All good mate, this one was less than quarter of the price of the one I liked down there. How much bling can I get for $20,000?

Ian, if you drop it, what you do, call a crane or a backhoe and bury it?
I all ways wondered how much can cost the damage dropping one at 50 kph or even less.

I all ways wondered how much can cost the damage dropping one at 50 kph or even less. The general idea is not to drop them Arthur. :D
I came off at 100 kph a few years back, after a dog took the front wheel out. Bike went down, I came off, bike stood up and carried on for 800 metres before hitting the armco and end for ending into a (dry fortunately) creek. My mates went and retrieved it in the daylight, took some finding apparently and it only suffered minor damage to the luggage rack.

Very nice Ian. I'm surprised that even Leeanne like the look of them, but I'm really hoping she'll prefer a Harley if the time ever becomes right again.
I always wondered how much they weigh.
My front wheel washed out on a gravel covered gutter as I pulled up at the pub once. It's amazing how much strength you get when your embarrassed  it did get me free drinks for a little while though :D

Settle down mate, it not my choice of ride but what other bike (or vehicle) goes close to it for value retention?
They'd have to be considered the Defender of motorcycles.

The big Triumphs, up to 2.3 litres, are nice bikes but with herniated discs I can only ride bikes that allow me to sit upright.

Yep, that's got me puzzled!
I just can not see the value in them - although some of the newer models are pretty nice...
They are the worlds best at marketing!!! I'll give them that!

About 12 months ago HD Australia dropped the prices of its range.
A guy on the AU HD forum was selling a 5yr old FatBoy for more than a new one... And he nearly got it!
All it had was pipes and a few extras...

A CVO Fatboy second hand will command more than a new regular version - regular second hand, average k's go for 4-5 under new price so yeah they hold value. Any Fatty selling 2nd hand for more than new is a CVO, and it's more than just a different set of pipes.
When it comes to topics like this, each to their own I say, along with if you ain't got nothin' nice to say don't say nothin'....still, I wonder if the knockers have actually ever riden a 103 cubic inch Harley? Once you do, everything becomes clear.
It's pretty easy to be nice about someone's new bike and I do wonder what one offers a discussion when one is not? Why not shut up?
So, regarding Ian's choice.....it's a fantastic new Wing Ian, and I look forward to us doing some fun rides together real soon.:)

Hey Scallops, yes I have had the opportunity to ride a few CVO HDs, must say the new engines are pretty nice, finally some poke to go with the sound.
They are an entire experience that's for sure.. And I still get a smile when I see the Night Rod but I'm a little to much of a Fat Boy for a V rod [emoji6]
As for power and torque - I'm playing with 109 cubes, quad cams, quad valves and custom fuel system :D
Plenty of my mates ride HDs, a few have Triumphs and we all enjoy a ride...

My dad had a 83 wing, I think it was only 1300cc. It was great to ride, feet up on the highway pegs, radio blarring, no wind on you, cruising at 110 with the thing barely ticking over at 1500rpm. Loved to ride it, was even very stable on back gravel roads (unlike his 750 quack).
I would love to buy a wing someday, and my wife would not reject - she looks forward to a comfy chair to sleep in.
A mate of mine ran a motorcycle repair business and was invited to a Honda ride day - the bike he chose was a new Gold Wing when everyone else was choosing the sports bikes. All the riders laughed at him for choosing the wing. Well after he kept up with the sport bikes including along the black spur, scraping the pegs/floorboards and arrived at lunch with out any aching arms, wrist or backs, guess who were trying to trade their sports bike for a chance on the wing - he had the last laugh.

, I wonder if the knockers have actually ever riden a 103 cubic inch Harley? Once you do, everything becomes clear.
.
A few years ago I had my first real Harley experience when I took my BIL Harley for a ride - was impressed with it's engine - but felt "heavy" to me, was only a short ride on straight rodes though. Then a while later I went for a long ride with some Harley owners - man I was impressed at how they handled the curves. I could match them in the corner speed on my little 600 but they could accelerate out of the bends soooooo much quicker. They earned their respect from me, but doubt I would actually own one.
As said before it is not what you ride but that you do ride.

Only 1300? :o Ron and I can remember when 500-750 were big bikes and 1000cc was heard of but never seen.
'83 'Wings were 1200cc., no slouch by any stretch.
