of people replacing their alternator - not that I really wanted to join!
I can smell it... LR dealer could smell it... but I could also smell the sting from dealer pricing, so took the gamble and made it home.
I disconnected the Traxide so the aux battery will survive. I was wondering why the voltage of the main was low after the 3 hour drive to go camping last weekend... now I know why!

It's not your Auxilliary you need to worry about, quickly disconnect your main battery or it will fail to short and drain and kill your main battery. Mine was killed in the time it took for me to get home, pick up my iPad and read the AULRO information on alternator failure. I immediately ran out and disconnected my main battery but it was too late it was fried.

Sorry, forgot to mention that I disconnected the main and put it on charge as well when I got home.
Before I left the dealer - I turned A/C and stereo (ie everything I could) off and disconnected the aux battery, so any current would go to just main battery.
30c day and it is quite stuffy in there.

was lucky with mine, did not fry the battery and it did not seem to short it, would run down to about 10v or so but not dead short.
I could charge the battery overnight and get aboyut 10 mins driving, maybe more with everything turned off.
Alternator replaced, day before christmas, $950 later parts & labour :censored:

Great news mate, I've been keeping an eye on these failures, I don't know if it's just me but it does seem to be a certain range of year models, or am I imagining it.

I bought a Prado GXL in 1997, new. I still have it (and now a Disco). Back then the GXL came with air con, but it was installed by the dealer before delivery. On my installation, the likely kid who did the job, left off the idler pully and hence the pully flexed and blew the alternator bearings. I heard the noise not long after taking delivery.
Toyota were astounded (I called into another dealer which is close to me) and they listened to the bearing with a stethascope and ordered another alternator.
Its cost back then in 1997, was $1,650, just for the alternator. $950 for the Land Rover one doesn't seem too bad at all ...

It was $1262 for the D4 2.7 alternator - from LR, then add $$$ for the "technicians" to fit it. Luckily my repairer got a much better price and install was way less.

Not to take anything away from your issue Jonesy, but God I love my Defender. I can open all the windows, even the two back ones, (crew cab) and feel the wind in my hair [bigwhistle] (yeh I know,,, what hair).
It just looks natural in a Defer ;)
Glad its all sorted now.

Ah, but Chops... you don't really need to open windows as there are already so many gaps in the Deefer - it is already "hair" conditioned! :D
