View Full Version : Rego for a 86" in Canberra - challenges...

I'm trying to get a 55 swb through full rego in Canberra without having to pay a visit to Dickson (the local pits... ha)
My local mechanic thought he could get the inspection done however after a call to ACT Rego, we have now got hung up over the VIN. The registration people insist it has to have one... despite every car prior to around 1980 not having one.
The vehicle was previously registered in SA where the papers says VIN/Chassis No: Not Recorded. It has been out of rego now for 6 months or so. I'm not sure if could just submit the chassis number as an alternative? I have had a good look around the forum and did find some encouragement from other's experiences, however if there is any one from Canberra who can offer specific advice on how to get this through, I would be most grateful.
Cheers

Have you looked at the chassis for the number or the ID plate?

Thanks for the advice. I have had a casual look around for the chassis stamp, without luck so far. The chassis had a fair bit of rust so not sure how much was cut out and replaced. I'm about to head out with a torch and see what I can find.
A conversation with my mechanic mate said that a conversation with the rego people might be cut short if I can prove that the chassis is stamped! I have my motivation now.
Appreciate the quick response, cheers - Simon

G'day simon, my 80in was on full act rego, chassis stamp was enough to get it thru, no need for a new vin

Thanks, I thought would be a few that had made it with just the chassis stamp.
Had a fruitless search last night for the number. Lots of the chassis was replaced at some stage, particularly sections forward of the engine mounts where some 86" were stamped (apparently Vic delivery).
Rear spring hangers look original however nothing obvious there. I'll have another go this evening with wire brush and sandpaper.

Australian assembled Series Landrovers had the chassis number on the LH back rear spring hanger, not where published UK and European descriptions show them.

I have a couple of CKD 86" Land Rover's here, they have their serial number's stamped on top of the chassis rail, just inside the bottom LHS hole of the radiator support panel.

I suspect that's where it used to be.. all nice new steel there now! I'm positive mine is CKD 86", chassis stamp on the bulkhead indicates correct dates et.
I'll have another good dig around both the LHS back rear spring hanger and the chassis rail. I was looking along the front to rear chassis, near the radiator support panel, however I'll check every bit of chassis around there just in case.
Thanks again for the help! Cheers

If the chassis no. is on the ID plate, can you have it stamped onto the nice new steel on the chassis?
If it's on the plate, do they need to see the chassis itself?

Been thinking the same thing myself, (unofficially). I'll double check all location first, would be a pity to not have the original stamp I guess.
In regards to seeing the chassis stamp, I think most motor registry employees would want to see it. The ACT guys definitely are keen.....

Identification numbers (http://www.seriesdiesellandrover.com/identification%20numbers.html)
Series One Two and III chassis numbers (http://www.landroverclub.net/Club/HTML/Series%20chassis_no.htm)Unfortunately Ron that information is less than complete.
The image is of an 80" which has the chassis number stamped in a different location to every other model. (In fact the first four numbers "8454" are the chassis build number and not part of the Chassis number or VIN. They are stamped at the chassis manufacturing factory for audit purposes before the chassis are shipped to the vehicle assembly factory. That vehicle's full ID is R06110036 the "R" and "L" for RHD or LHD were discontinued not much after that vehicle)
Also Queensland assembled vehicles from about 1952 had their chassis numbers stamped on the top of the LHS chassis rail in front of the engine mount bracket (80" 86" and 107")
As others have mentioned, vehicles assembled outside the UK may have their chassis number in a different location to those assembled in the UK. Australian PMC assembled vehicles have the chassis number stamped on the LHS rear spring (shackle) bracket.
South African assembled vehicles have the chassis number stamped on the LHS front spring hanger bracket.
If the chassis no. is on the ID plate, can you have it stamped onto the nice new steel on the chassis?
If it's on the plate, do they need to see the chassis itself?Yes they do need to see the chassis, In Australia the vehicle identity is the number stamped into the vehicle frame or body in a monococque. The ID plate is only a secondary identity. Not sufficient for vehicle identity as it can be removed and placed onto another vehicle.

In SA the chassis number is accepted when the car is "pre VIN".
On inspection the stamped VIN/CHASSIS number MUST be inspected and seen to match any plate/ID fitted, also engine number checked and recorded, these are all checked via all aussie states to ensure not stolen etc etc.
Also check of lights, etc etc (basic roadworthy) conducted whenever we do one. (and we charge $65!!) but once you have the inspection certificate you head to SERVICE SA (MOTOR REG) and register, dont need to take car!!!
Unsure if its same there but if getting historical rego here you need to satisfy the club inspector only as they sign off on them (and theyre strict so that the system isnt dismantled etc)

I had issues some years ago with a vehicle that had the chassis no on a brass plate riveted to the chassis. ACT inspector wanted it stamped on chassis.
I said I'd do some more work and find where it was stamped into chassis.
Went home and stamped chassis ... Just 'we could not find it earlier'
Rego inspector was happy and none the wiser!
May be worth changing inspector as there are some who are not confident with earlier vehicles, so inclined to accept whatever you say!

Thanks mate.. I think that could be our solution as well.
Things have changed in our circumstances now, heading up to Thursday Island for 2 years with work so the Landy may well go into storage for the interim. I was tempted to take her up there but I don't think they'll allow me two vehicles! Might come back with 2 though if there's anything up there worth saving....

You may want to call in and see Marko (Marko66 on this Forum) at Bamaga if / when you are down that way. He had a stack of Series Land Rovers when he was at Adelaide River.
