Series Land Rover Gearbox Question

Hi,

I have just acquired a 1964 Land Rover series 2A and am in need of some help. I am 15 years old and am no expert when it comes to cars. My series 2A came with a broken gearbox, I have sourced a series 3 gearbox and was wondering what I might need to make it fit. My 2A has had a Holden conversion and is currently running a 202 red motor. The series 3 gearbox has a 4 cylinder bell housing just like the gearbox currently in my 2A. From what I have heard the gearbox should fit in with minor modifications.

The bell housing to flywheel housing fitting on the Series 2a and 3 gearboxes are the same. (the difference is four cylinder to six cylinder) The difference is the clutch operating mechanism is different between the Series 3 and Series 1/2/2a. But all you need for the change is to replace the piping for the clutch slave cylinder, the slave cylinder itself and the clutch plate and pressure plate.

Alternatively, it may be possible to swap the bell housing if your existing gearbox is a late enough one - an examination of the gearbox end of the bell housing should make this clear.

One point you need to check - some Holden adapter plates are known to have been made inaccurately, resulting in gearbox failure. If possible you should, when the gearbox is out, check carefully with a dial gauge that the mounting surface for the bell housing is parallel to and concentric with the flywheel. This should be done when any Holden engined Landrover box is out, especially if the reason is gearbox problems.

My 2A has previously had a full syncro series 2A gearbox in it, does this make any difference?

Full synchro came in with the Series 3 to my limited understanding.

I had thought that the Series 2A models had no synchromesh on 1st and 2nd gears. We had the last of the Series 2A (1972) and it certainly didn't have a full syncho gearbox.

Series 2a had an all synchromesh gearbox fitted to home market station wagons with chassis number suffix H.

There would be very few of these in Australia. This was similar to the Series 3 setup, but there were probably a few differences (I have not compared parts lists).

Hi,

Land Rover made a few full syncro gearboxes befor converting them to series 3 gearboxes. These 2A boxes are known as the suffix "S" box, There aren't very many of these made so they are very rare.
