Looking for a GPS unit that I can use in a car / bus. Every on-line review I've read is frightening... Needs to be 5" screen or better, and to be able to record a trip or two. Daily map updates not needed as our buses never venture far from old established areas.

For air use, needs to be quick to show ground speed, and the ability to record a route (flight) would be the ants pants. Naturally, good battery life, say 90 minutes would be nice too...

Would I be better off with something like a Garmin X-trex which I understand will record your route on the go, and can be downloaded afterwards.
Bonus if it could record and sit in my pocket till needed. (when a NAV-EX goes horribly wrong...)

Yes, you're right, am totally lacking in any knowledge and limited experience...(Mio 4" about 5 years ago)

This is what I would get from what you have specified - https://buy.garmin.com/en-AU/AU/outdoor/handheld/montana-650t/prod75228.html

The Montana is a hand held GPSr that can be used as an on-dash mounted unit powered by the 12v car socket, has excellent battery life when carrying it around in your pocket - about 15 hours, fantastic detailed maps including topo maps. Will track your route and you can also create routes and load them into the GPSr to follow. Includes turn by turn navigation of course!
You can get it cheaper without the maps and then source some free maps that are available on the net.
