unsettling bang

Heard 2 loud bangs from somewhere underneath the disco td5 yesterday whilst reversing in low range.
Pulled in to a caravan park and engaged low range to make positioning the van easier. Prior to parking i drove about 200m in low range which included a couple of sharp left and right turns and finally reversed onto the site and as I was doing this there were 2 solid bangs...sound like a couple of teeth being sheared off somewhere. Diff lock was not engaged.
I moved forward a couple of metres, disengaging and reengaging low range again and all seemed ok.
Could this just have been some wind up in the diff that has corrected itself once the tension was released? If so, is this likely to cause any damage?

Lots of possibilities. Did you have the centre diff locked? If so, could be wind up. There's also a problem with the diff spindles wearing in the casing due to traction control use that may have caused the bangs. Drop drive train oils to check might be worthwhile?

Just sounds like wind up.Were you reversing aand turning at the same time.this still puts a strain on something.could of been the tyres deforming etc

Associated more with clunks, vibrations and squeaks rather than bangs but worth checking the DC joint on the front tail-shaft.

Did you disengage low range before moving forward after the bangs? Perhaps it jumped out of low range after not being fully engaged.

that was my first thought graeme. from memory I think I rolled forward slightly disengaged and then re-engaged low range and all seemed ok then.
its often tight to engage (normally impossible if not moving slightly) and I make a point of easing the lever fully into position. Having said that, there is a possibility that it may not have been fully engaged. I tend to use LR for manoeuvreing the van slowly into tight places and this is the first time this has happened.

will drop oils and have a look for any unexpected bits of metal

diff lock was not engaged so wind up unlikely. bangs sounded metalic so I think this rules out the tyres

You don't have an auto locker/unlocker by any chance. My Detroit clunks a bit, especially in reverse.

was the van hooked up at the time.Brakes stuck on or not disconnected whilst backing.?
