I think they make cars too safe, the more safety stuff they put on cars the more people switch off. Pat

The sad thing is most road deaths could have been avoided.
People often treat their cars like a lounge room, figgeting, putting feet up, fiddling around instead of concentration on the sole task of driving

Unlike a motorbike where you are more one with the machine and make pretty direct inputs with your body, new cars do have so many distractions also. I hired an Aurion to drive for work in Melbourne. The amount of bloody buttons and gizmos I thought I'd need an induction before being allowed to drive it.
People don't pay enough attention to such an important task. We've got disconnected from the machines, more distracted and live in a false sense of safety - due to certain OHS policies that seem to trivialise common sense and removing the onus on an operator of a piece of equipment.

Totally agree , WA had the highest rod toll per capita last year in Oz and the way we are going it wont be any better this year . I just cant get my head around the bad standard of driving as displayed here in WA .

Must agree about the amount of distracting toys there are in cars these days.
Seems as if there's something else for every driver to do to while away the time when they should be concentrating full time on what they're doing.
Many new cars with the latest design gizmo also appear never to have been checked to see if the new "improvement" actually does improve things. Check out a lot of buzz boxes and see if you can actually spot an indicator working until it's directly square on to you. Hopeless things hidden behind clear plastic. Although WA drivers rarely use them anyway.
Then there's the convex external mirrors!!!! Even the Deafener came with these bloody awful things so I changed them for flat mirrors. Did the same with the Prado as it was hopeless trying to reverse a van using them.
But I don't think the phone, Ipad, GPS or other stuff can be blamed entirely for the awful standard of driving here as we live in the Joondalup area and see what goes on with instruction and testing on the local roads near the test centre.
We also see the cops from the local academy under going what passes for training at no more than the speed limit with flashing lights and sirens. The standards there don't seem to be much different to other driver training.
And 90% of them opt for traffic duties straight from training and most of them drive just like mum and dad always did when they were in the car as kids. :o
The powers that be were proclaiming last years low death rate as proof that their road safety strategies were working......anyone who drives a lot could have told them it was an aberration as the driving and attitudes hadn't improved a bit.
This year it's back to normal with most deaths occurring in the country (no seat belts and running off the road into trees) so their reaction is to buy more speed cameras......to use in the city as they're not "cost effective" in the country!
That shows where their priorities lie.

I always find It sad when we hear of road deaths . I think that after driving for awhile drivers become complacent , and drive more on instincts . This of course can be a major contributing factor !!.. Jim..

We have long open roads boarded by tree's,we also have many remote comunities and many kilometers of dirt roads and most likely do more long Km's at higher average speeds than most other states, the NT is in the same boat. Pat

It doe not matter what the roads are like or in which state they are in , if people drive to conditions then everything will be copacetic .

You watch Channel 10 :eek::eek::eek::eek:
Worst of all the free to air channels IMO. There's very rarely anything on there that I'd bother to watch.

2 of those deaths were from motorcycle accidents. The other 2 deaths were from the van and truck collision early Sat morning on the Kwinana Freeway. Thick smog across the freeway, for which the van allegedly stopped on the freeway due visibility. Unfortunately, for whatever reason the truck has hit the stationary van. This killed the passenger in the van, the truck driver died shortly later in hospital.
Second accident was the Motorbike rider in Chidlow, who died at the scene. He was on his way to getting a haircut, prior to his fathers wedding later in the day.
Third accident was another Motorbike rider on the Mitchell Freeway, he passed away in Hospital.
I fly media for one of the Perth TV stations, so Saturday was a horrible morning.

Yep really bad day, 4 deaths and heaps of accidents. People or I should say idiots driving straight into smoke without any visibility at 110kmph or more and of course vehicles already in the smoke down to 60 kmph or less. Main roads knew about the fire but did not reduce road speed.
Not surprising on the freeway cars travelling at anywhere from 80 - 150 kmph without any reason on most days.
