I recently got my first land rover it a 54 s1 86" with a fairly worked 202 I have many questions.
Was hoping someone could post pics of original seating and any of ur custom seating to cheers?
Also is there anywhere u can buy a speedo with kmph instead of mph aftermarket of course?
Does anyone know roughly how many series 1 came to Australia?
What's a series 1 in relatively good condition worth out of curiousity?
And anything u guys reckon I should know about then let me know keen to learn

Hello,
Welcome to the forum!!!
Congrats on your series 1 acquisition.
Spedo, miles to km- They all came with miles - there may be some in km dor some overseas markets but these would be rare. Maybe some small stickers over the speedo may help?
Not sure how many came to Australia - quite a few....
WHat is a series one worth? - This is practically unanswerable question. It all depends on the condition and what has been done to them over their long lives. The more original they are the higher the value. Holden powered S1's are generally worth a lot less as most of them have had front cross members butchered to shoehorn the big donk in.

Hi John
A significant number of series 1's came to Australia (tens of thousands), in fact during the Series 1 era, the Snowy Mountains Hydro Electricity Scheme had the largest Land Rover fleet in the World, and that included military fleets of Land Rovers.
I would watch ebay Europe (Norway, Denmark, Belgium, Germany) and Canada as they had Series 1 speedo assemblies calibrated in KPH.
The standard seating in all S1 86" was the three cushions/squabs across the front. The 107 wagon was the only one in that era with different seating.

When I sent my MGB speedo (MPH) for repair , they put some red dots on the face were 40, 60, 80 & 100 KPH is . You could just use some red contact stuck on he glass to mark the speeds you want

I've got some kph's written on a bit of cardboard stuck on the dash on my series 3. I've seen (in old pics) what looks like a transfer that you stick on the dial - but haven't seen one for sale. The red dot idea is a good simple solution which I hadn't thought of. Thanks.

Hi,
This is not a perfect solution - but I bought this for my Series:
Speedo MPH TO KPH Conversion Chart Dash Magnetic FX FJ EH Vintage Holden Ford GT | eBay (http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Speedo-Mph-To-Kph-Conversion-Chart-Dash-Magnetic-Fx-Fj-Eh-Vintage-Holden-Ford-GT-/151633263657?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_15&hash=item234e0bfc29)
Basically for $5 - it is a magnetic sticker that I have on the dashboard, showing KM = MPH
In my Series the speedo needle is always jumping around a bit, so I always make sure that I am slightly under the actual posted speed limit!
Imagine getting a speeding fine in a 50+ year old car! :wasntme:

You could reduce the sticker by 1/3, the bottom bits are useless :p :p

I bought a transfer for the MGB that fitted on the glass but when the repairer said he would put the red dots on I didn't bother with the transfer . Next time I am at the workshop I will see if it fits the larger S1 speedo , & let you know .

G'day all;
I went a different way regarding speedos. My 2A is fitted with 7.50 tyres and like all mechanical speedos oscillates around the speed +/-.
I fitted a GPS speedo made by Hummingbird model HMSS1000B ($330). I choose the Bulkhead antenna because I had a suitable hole aready in the roof but they have an internal antenna model as well. Accurate to +/- 1Km.
My thinking was, one fine for a 40Km school zone is over $300 and speed camera cars only allow a small margin of over speed.
Now I know how fast I'm going!!!!
Best Regards Chris

How accurate are your GPS speedos in that type of location?

I have a rather unique way of calculating speed in my S1. A bit anal maybe, but it works for me :D
My speedo reads about 10 mph faster than actual speed, as checked against a GPS. I worked out that if I multiply the number on the speed sign by 8 it "roughly" works out to my speedo sign in mph.
As said, it works for me.

what is it with the speedo flapping about so much? Does it need adjusting or is that just the way it is? I recently picked up a series 3 which was the first road driving one I have owned and the needle was flapping about within 10mph.
cheers,

speedo cables are supposed to be regularly lubricated with light machine oil. You can almost guarantee that a S1 speedo hasn't had any maintenance for decades. Ideally you should take the cable out, withdraw the inner from the outer and wash both in petrol. Inspect the inner and outer for kinks, if kinks present or fractures in the inner present you should replace the cable, If all O.K. lubricate the entire length with sewing machine oil insert the inner back into the outer and re-install.
you may also need o lubricate the back of the speedo where the cable enters.
If this doesn't solve the bounce the speedo itself needs a service by an instrument fitter.

You should only lube the bottom 2/3 's of the cable , you do not want to get any oil into the speedo head as this will get onto the magnetics & give you an incorrect reading . Usually if the cable is in good condition & the speedo is flicking you need to service the speedo to clean & the magnetics could be getting weak. Also the cable should have gentle curves & no sharp bends .
