Hi there - I have a 2015 HSE Discovery 4 & I want to replace the passenger 12V console socket with a USB socket. I'm guessing this involves dismantlement of the centre console so I'm after some advice on how to go about this. Obviously SWMBO is very keen for me not to break anything.
thanks in advance.

Ok, I will ask....
Why not just get a plug in USB adapter? I have several in the car, and the ones in the front supply 3 amps, and have 2 sockets.
Found them on Ebay for a couple of bucks each.
Lot less stress than pulling the car apart. ;)

x2....me too.
Not worth the effort to pull out the console.

Never walk away from a challenge...
Assuming its the same as my 2010, its not difficult...
1 Put in neutral. Pull straight up on gear knob and it pops off
2 remove centre consol cup holder
3 unscrew screws holding drinks holder wet tray
4 remove screws holding centre consol under cup holders
5 lift out panel just infront of centre box
6 lift and slide whole console up and back
And thats about it..
Good luck

The 8 speed models are nothing like a 2010;)

Wayne.
There is a USB input in the glove box on base models, pretty sure the HSE has them on the back of the console too;)

There may also be a USB & an Ipod input under the center console lid. At least, there is on my MY13.

Hi Wayne,
I've done it on mine it's quite easy to do.
Bluepippas instructions are pretty spot on, just ignore step 1, and step 5.
When removing the console assembly pull up and disengage the clips on the rear part ('cooler box' end) first.
With regard to the integrated USB sockets, they are a bit naff as they only supply 500mA so they're not much chop for charging things.
I've installed one of these (hidden behind the panel above the pedals):-
Under-Dash or Panel Mount USB Socket | Car Hardware Accessories | Car Audio Hardware | Sight & Sound Car | PRODUCTS | PS2016 | Jaycar Electronics (http://www.jaycar.com.au/Sight-%26-Sound-Car/Car-Audio-Hardware/Car-Hardware-Accessories/Under-Dash-or-Panel-Mount-USB-Socket/p/PS2016)
And I can highly recommend it.
If you want to avoid faffing about just grab one of these and whack it into the existing socket:-
Anker 24W Dual-Port USB Car Charger (http://www.ianker.com/product/71AN2452CSS-BA)
There are lots of alternatives but the Anker version is the best I've found.

Might chine in on this one,
if its anythign like a D3 then its a pretty simple job, I need to do mine again, not to put a USB socket in but to secure the standard lighter socket that has come loose.
but while on the topic, why not put an aftermarket USB socket inside the glove box instead? that would be my approach (and will be, along with one up on top of the dash to run my Glonas GPS receiver)

I've put a twin 2.1a outlet in the back of the centre console in my D3 to replace the ciggy outlet and it is connected to my aux battery so I can leave USB things on charge or running all the time when touring. Works well for me.

Hi Wayne.
I have the TOPIx workshop instructions for removing the centre console. Its pretty easy to do but you need to know where to pull the trim etc. I can't attach a PDF file here so PM me your email address and I will send it to you.
Cheers,
Chris

Hi LandyAndy,
Yes the HSE has a USB port in the top glovebox and one in the rear of the console but neither will charge the iPad on the go. As we intend to use it as our roadmap and POI reference we need it to be charged.

Hi drelectro,
Thanks for the suggestions. I have a twin USB socket about the same size as the one in the console hence the request. I haven't heard of the "Anker" unit before but it looks good - where did you get yours?
My socket is a 2.1A plus a 1A to enable the Ipad & iPhone both to be charged at once.

Hi Basil135,
I've been through so many of the adapters it's not funny. Either it's not compatible with the idevice I want to charge or it charges too slow or not at all - I've given up hence the alternative of a dedicated socket.
thanks,
Wayne

Hi Wayne,
You can get the Anker adapters from Amazon, they ship directly to Australia.
I can assure you that the Anker is not like all of the other craptacular adapters and will charge your things including iThings at full power.

Or just go to jaycar they sell a plug in one with 4.2a output = 2 iPads charging at once no probs.
The one I have hard wired is a marine one that also does two 2.1a outputs.
