Wondering if any of you notice a really noxious smell when starting the engine in a garage / enclosed space??
Reason being previous D4 2.7 was fine to start in my garage eg maybe pull forward a meter or 2 to fit a bike rack ( starting, moving then engine off & with garage roller door and rear garage access door open ). The new 3l is so different as when you do this it's an overpowering and I don't think healthy to breathe in. Is it specific to the newer models or larger engine OR does it simply need a tune, surprising as it's only a couple of months old. Will obviously ask when the health check is due at the dealer but if anyone has noticed the same and found a solution that would be good to know.

Mine smells to not sure how to describe it but yeah don't think any diesel fumes are good to breathe in weather you can smell them or not!!

Yes quite fumey.
Not like any other diesel I've had.
I figure different burn parameters at cold start up.

I would agree. The SDV6 definitely smells while the D4 2.7 it replaced did not.

Yep noticed a bit of overfuelling at cold start up but no big deal it dissipates quickly. But if you are doing a lot of short running and the cat doesn't get hot enough then they do get worse on the nose. So a good run along a freeway or over 80kph for 30 minutes or so seems to clear the issue if it happens to us but rarely as we tow a lot and every weekend almost is a trip or some sort of 4WDriving which means we get the whole mechanical side quite loaded up

Possibly the smell of the diesel particulate filter if fitted?? Diesel particulate is a know carcinogen s try to avoid fumes where possible

Its caused by the catalytic converter.

Normally a lot of short trips around the city, even less now I'm riding the pushy to work.

That's something you need to stop doing, that is not good for the DPF, and leads to problems with them, they need a good run to burn the particutes, if they build up (and they will) it can lead to a replacement, which is not cheap, take it for a drive every couple of days, the longer the better, but 30mins minimum.

Our SDV6 2013 RRS was also fuming and smelly at start up. Was the turbo drain. Even though it was known issue when car was built LR still built car with original design drain pipes. Ended up having to have not only new drains installed but all filter pipework etc as this was oil contaminated. Something also to check and consider. If car show's any sign of blue smoke on initial start up, then report that to your dealer. Ours had 15000K on it only. Once new design drains were fitted, all pipework clean, and good hard run to clean exhausts, now seems fine. No smell. Car now at 33K

Interesting. I wonder when the new design drains started to be fitted as stock? Can this be determined by VIN or Topix?

Not sure. Someone on here might know. Was surprised as car was HSE Black late 2013. But, drains were still original design. ;) Thinking of getting extended warranty later this year in case of any turbo failure later down track.

Perhaps this issue is not what the OP is experiencing, given that he is getting a bad smell rather than lots of oil smoke.

Anyway, at this thread (link below) Graeme thought that perhaps the updated turbo drain pipe was factory fitted from late 2012 onwards.

Meccles, is your RRS early 2013?

Scott

Definitely a lot less smoke than the 2.7 under acceleration, will raise the turbo drain issue others have when getting the 6 month health check which is soon. See how the free corporate service plan goes!

I have a Nov 2011 build 2012 model and at the end of warranty check by the dealer had the turbo drain pipe fitted. Does not now blow smoke.

Will have to check build date when next back in Oz. The car has been with us since Sept 13, it had 3000km on it, was pretty sure build date was in 2013. But will have to confirm.

Quick update on this - had it checked when they did the stability control software recall update. No issue with the exhaust - must be because it's new ( 8 months old / 10.5k ). Different materials used and they need time to burn off the just manufactured smell. Still is fumey when you fire it up.
