It appears that got two people.
It is a repulsive act IMO and I hope that the authorities will get to the bottom of this

Man and woman arrested, charged following discovery of 55 dumped greyhound carcasses (http://www.abc.net.au/news/2015-04-02/police-arrest-two-after-55-greyhound-carcasses-found-dumped/6369282'section=qld)

Tis a dirty industry greyhound racing

The reports on TV last year were saying that

Dogs they had no use for were put down

By bleeding them to death and then using

The blood in transfusion to other dogs

Evidently many hundreds of dogs are disposed

Of this way

I heard this covered on the radio this morning and the newsreader referred to the "murder" of 55 greyhounds.

A nasty business no doubt but when did dogs become people?

There is a cruelty to animals act (law) which the perpetrators will be charged with, but in a legal sense (in my understanding) murder is the killing of one person by another.
I'd chalk that one up to a journo trying to spice up the story with emotive language. Not the first time this has been done by the media, and definitely not the last.

Nasty business indeed. I'd support stronger regulation and harsher penalties to the Cowboys who run their businesses in this way, I'm not part of the 'shut down the industry' crowd. I don't mind a punt on the dish lickers.

It was on the whisper many years ago that if a dog did not perform the ears were cut off to stop I.D and dispose of the body. As for Live baiting, that's been going on for years, possums were worth about $50 if you could supply them, no questions asked. It is not a clean industry.

They have a better rights council.

I know many home owners who would happily supply possums for free, provided they don't return.

It would be nice to see the :censored: doing that and report them so the full force of the law can be used and I hope without bail rights.

Whilst it's a sick act, and I hope those responsible get to spend many happy months with Bubba and his bar of soap, why does this get such an emotional response but the dail, legal, mistreatment of thousands of animals in the name of food supply scarcely raise a whisper....

It falls under the category of 'out of sight, out of mind' most likely....

In urban areas, possums are a pest.
Many are dispatched.

I'm sure in the Chucaro residence roaches are welcome and insect sprays are banned but out in the greater society, if there is a pest, it is dealt with.

We do not have roaches in Tasmania ;) but in any case in my home we use pyrethrum ;)

So you put possums and other native Australian fauna in the same category of roaches
No, I cannot believe it you just steer the pot :)

No stirring. "Tis true. Round these parts, possums in urban areas are considered by home owners to be pests.

We had a problem with possums and over abundance of them. The pee and poop all over the place and in summer the stench outside is putrid. They look cute and cuddly until you have to put up with them. Joys of living in bushy areas. If you wanna live here you have to put up with it.

It's just a big media beat up on the greyhound industry, following the live bait scandal.
This is an environmental issue, not an animal cruelty case. Any dog owner has the right to euthanase their animals. These dogs were shot, a humane destruction.
Greyhound racing, like every other industry that revolves around animals, is a business, money comes first.

Well if money comes first, then the Greyhound Industry are stupid and wasting money, Greyhounds make great pets apparently, why don't they sell them, I know they won't sell them all, but give them to someone that can sell the rest, but I would imagine, sadly, that would be to hard.

IMO anyone that callous and thinks that is OK, is not a nice person and I would imagine has the same disregard for anything or anyone.

I don't understand this hatred for (so called) pests, YOU are living in THEIR environment, if you don't like it move, we have Possums, ring and brushtails, do they pee everywhere, yes, but we just clean it, a bit of vinagar in water does the trick.

rant over

Baz.

The idea of the owners draining their blood is obscene, but we don't know that happened, so what about if they were euthanised? What if a trainer did have a policy of selectively culling dogs that were unsuitable for racing? Should that be illegal? Should it be illegal for a farmer to shoot a dog?

I'm not trying to troll, there is a moral/philosophical question here. When I heard about this I felt I needed more information before I made a moral judgement. The blood thing sickened me, but as I said I don't know if that is true.

In my opinion 55 dead dogs in the bush is something that deserves/ requires investigation certainly, but I was not outraged by it based on that fact alone.

Removing blood and re injecting it is known as blood doping. Prohibited but commonplace in some human sports (traditionally endurance type sports)
The real question is how the trainers know what blood type their dogs are.

Here is an ABC report from 2013, on the putting down of unwanted greyhounds. Seems it is a common practice, hundreds, or more each year. Makes you wonder why, if it was accepted practice , would someone dispatch so many dogs & dump them in the bush. Cost?

The New Scientist, 1987, states blood doping of greyhounds would be counterproductive , go to page 46, Bob
