Just straying back to the original post - the track at Leyburn wasn't Morgan Park it was an ex WW2 bomber base, had three main runways in a triangular shape. It is about 4 kays from the village of Leyburn, where they hold annual sprint meetings.
Morgan Park is a top class racetrack just a few kays out of Warwick, surrounded by other horsepower related facilities, (1/8th mile dragstrip, polocrosse fields, three-day eventing course, and there was a mud racing track).

I suspect the answer you are looking for is Augathella, where the movie was going to be made but that fell through. The movie was eventually made at Camden (NSW) and at the old Pagewood Studios in Sydney's Eastern Suburbs. The movie is set in the fictitious town of Murrumbilla (the real Murrumbilla is near Narrabri, NSW). Smiley author (Neville Ernest) Moore Raymond, was born at Pimpana in Queensland. As a child he lived in Pampana, Augathella and Sharon near Bundaberg.
Interestingly, Moore Raymond is not as well known as his younger brother Bob Raymond who older forumites may remember for his current affairs and nature writings, and TV journalism.
Cheers

Correct. The author of the book that the movie was based on was the son of the Augathella school teacher. He wrote about his best mate, Didey Creevy. Augathella sits just about in the right spot for some one driving from Brisbane to Longreach to have a break. Well worth spending a day or two here, good pub too. Bob

It is indeed the first choice, the road most easily travelled from the last available fuel stop for a petrol 2WD heading across the desert. I tried to leave enough clues...
The most popular way in to the springs is from Mt Dare Station. This track can be very corrugated . It also gets slippery and muddy after rain!https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2015/04/699.jpg

Just too quick :p
Isn't using the Edjits report sort of cheating:o
You are correct it is Mt Carnarvon. It was bloody freezing that day. But it did not prevent my axuillary battery boiling and almost blowing up - dropped a cell
