View Full Version : camping trailer to carry dirtbikes

So does anyone have a trailer they use for camping that also carries dirt bikes?
What I mean is with a roof topper on it, awnings, kitchen etc...etc...and also carries 3-4 bikes?
I need to build a trailer for this, must be able to carry 4 full size dirt bikes, have some means of keeping out of the weather, cooking facilities, some sort of sleeping area, and must be an open trailer.
So, I have been thinking single axle, heavy duty off road leaves, 8x5 in size, with a frame to mount a straight pull out awning and a fox wing style awning, 4 Jerry holders, gear box on front, and may be even a roof topper on top.
Oh and we already have a real camper trailer, this one is just for weekend away with the bikes.
So does anyone have anything like this or pics?
Cheers

There are ones made already, made by certain trailer places, we looked at one at a show a few years ago.
Here's one mob, may give you some ideas, the one that lowers after getting the bikes out is a cracking idea, means you don't have get a custom top made.

Cheers Baz, I did see those, not sure the first one is big enough to carry 4 bikes, and not sure I want to spend that sort of coin but find a cheap enough camper top and I'm sure I could make it work. As for the second one, that is way way to big:)

Tops to fit that are around the $1200 mark(made in Malaysia) designed for a drop of 1100mm, which is the standard height for camper tops, I looked at a camper in Lilydale Vic and while there asked how much their tops where, I was supprised at the quality, the camper on the other hand:(

How about the Quokka made by Ritter Land Rover?
Might not carry enough bikes though..

Follow Me Campers do custom builds so you can get anything you want. George already has a model where you can carry quad bikes.
We got a custom build where we can carry 2 x 4.7m kayaks, mountain bikes plus a folding boat trailer.

I already have a cub daintree le camper which is staying with us, just looking for something when we do those long weekends with the bikes. 8x5 with roof Toppers or awnings and swags. Something like that. Was just wondering what others do:)

Sort of what I'm planning, but needs to be able to carry 4 bikes, and would be handy as a trailer as well so I could go collect wood at camp.

Get an 8'x5' box trailer then the bikes can be fitted at a slight angle with a camper tent fitted above them. Fit the tent on a tilting platform then makes it easier to load and unload the bikes. If you have another cover made to fit around the trailer itself that will give you another double bed area on the trailer floor so the tent dosent have to be too big. Simples:D

Ok so am about to start this project. I have dragged out my old burnt out dingo campertrailer which i will cut the top off and plan to convert from 6x4 to 8x5. It has a really long drawbar so will be easy to do.
Question for the brains trust, i have to replace the axle (50mm solid sqaure) to suit the new width, can anyone see an issue with leaving the springs where they are? Its only and extra 150mm over hang on each end of the axle.
Trailer will only be carrying about around 700kg. Springs are rated at 1500kg

30th June 2015, 10:37 AM
Umm, I would think you should move the springs if it's not too big a job, less overhang would reduce the flex. Pretty sure the aim is to keep springs close ish to the wheels
Vern
30th June 2015, 11:24 AM
Yeah was trying to avoid that, but wouldn't imagine much flex on 50mm solid bar. Will see how hard it will be when its all apart. Just being lazy😊
Vern
30th June 2015, 12:53 PM
Well will now basically be starting from scratch, just ordered the steel to build a new trailer😊.
Can amyone see me neading electric trailer brakes? It just going to be an offroad 8x5 trailer to carry bikes on
weeds
30th June 2015, 01:04 PM
Apparently you need brakes if the trailer is over 750kg.
I imagine four bikes, tent, kitchen, batteries, fuel, water will add up.
My trailer ended up blowing out to 1200kg........
Splash out and run Land Rover hubs and brakes on a 50mm axle.
Vern
30th June 2015, 01:15 PM
Time, effort, and cost, electric brakes looks quicker, easier, and cheaper😊
Vern
30th June 2015, 04:32 PM
So i can get some 60series cruiser front leaves and shackles which not sure if they will be to heavy. Also plan to upgrade the brakes on our campertrailer to electric and landrover pattern, so will use the old 6 stud overide brakes from it on the 8x5.

You will need to custom built. 7 x 5 trailer with 3 bikes in usual position and the fourth bike on the drawbar at right angles. Then build frame for RTT or bigger fold out tent (like the old style Shippshape RTT)

Did you read any of this thread?
You can't fit 2 bikes let alone 3 on a 7 foot trailer (unless you angle them), hence going 8 foot, you just put the 2 inside bikes on backwards.

I've put 4 x bikes on my 7 x 5, the 2 outside ones angled into the front corners and the third in the center backwards with the front wheel angled. Then we put an XR100 on the drawbar as well.
My next trailer will be the similar dimensions however I will enclose the mudguards in the tray and put a cutout in the front panel so the center bike is forward of the others
Vern
1st July 2015, 01:15 PM
Yeah I want all bikes in the trailer that's why I need 8 foot as some bikes I carry are just over 7foot so have to be angled. Draw bar is for storage box and cooking gear, it also isn't wide enough for a full size bike, will hang out half a foot either side. Xr100 is a bit shorter than a yz250f:), at the moment it is fine as the kids are young, but they will want bigger bikes in years to come, plus an 8x5 is more useful to me than a 7x5

I'm happy in the swags, but if I want to keep the missus interested in it then it needs to suit her needs more than mine;)

961498.5 x 5.5 seems to work ok, snug fit but as compact as i can get it. Only drama is the wheels will hang out quite a bit. Was thinking of running a small internal wheel arch to get the track narrower, will stuff up having a full flat floor but will be able to get the track within 100mm of the rangie as apposed to 400mm.

Geedublya
8th July 2015, 08:01 PM
I think internal wheel arch is the best solution to keep the track down as well. Either that or run the tray above the wheels however then it gets a bit high.
At least the center of the bikes will be above the wheel arch so it shouldn't impinge on the tray too much.
Vern
8th July 2015, 08:24 PM
Exactly, just ruins the flat trailer floor thingy, trailer floor will be about 700-800 off the ground, but will help the the roof top tent awning height.
Vern
8th July 2015, 08:32 PM
Now i just need to figure out where that axle needs to go. Moving the wheels into the floor area still gives me 1350 between the wheel archesas apposed to 1650ish

A Central axle position or just forward of centre usually works best for bike trailers, which is about in line with the bike engine.
I don't know if this may help, but this is a good way to help fit the bikes on, stager them like this, it may increase the length a tad though.

Yeah i followed the box trailer rules baz and put the axle back 4" from centre (1" back for every 2' of trailer tub length), 2 bikes go on forward 2 bikes go on backward so balances out. Plus it is just a box trailer.

96310chassis all tacked together, need a new bottle of gas so i can weld it all. So now i just need to work out how i should do the frame for the roof top tent and 2.5m supapeg rapid wing awning. Will need to be on some sort of hinge to flip the frame up out the way to make loading and unloading of the bikes easier.
Idea's anyone?

What about a boat loader type setup, only forward opening, like an enclosed bike trailer.

Was thinking something.like that baz!
Current drama is the axle and brakes. Was going to use the overide disks off our cub camper and upgrade its brakes to electric with land rover pattern. Simple i thought! But due to the bearings used on the stub axle (holden outer bearing) i have to go to a 12" electric drum ($400 each with bits) and then the axle i have to get to use the overide discs on the bike trailer is around $380!😠. Ahhhhhh

I know override discs seem like a good idea, but wait till you try and find replacements if you should need to on the road, I can tell you from first hand experience, it's impossible and the disc hubs were HQ Holden, heaps of drum and non braked hubs(which I had to settle for) but no disc hubs to be found, at the time we were camped near Mansfield, even Wodonga had none in stock.
I'd stick with override drums if I were you, that's what I went back too.

In that case i should just go a 10" electric drum with handbrake!

Next step for us is 10" electric for our currant camper, or new one if we change.
I still carry the non braked hub for emergencies in remote areas, just in case.

Like the Bosch ECU D4, the Amarok needs to be bench mapped, Bosch ECUs have a anti-mapping device in their ECUs that requires removing/played with in order to re-map them, PITA.
I have been told that Superchip(Bluefin) now bench map the D4 and Amarok.
