Brains trust, I stopped driving my 52 80in because it cracked a front spring, now I figure I might as well give it some love and get it registered again, so a few questions.
The back diff has a little whine at speed, but the rear propshaft is buggered.. Are parts readily available for the back diff if I pull it out and take it to a specialist? Should I try and get a new propshaft or rebuild and rebalance the original?
As for the springs, I think I can put the later or series 2 springs in the front? And lastly what's best to protect the chassis with without removing the body?
Thanks in advance.

Hi Summitt,

I rebuilt klonks diffs, hes a 51 and I think the bearings alone cost $260 per diff, they were timkins though. There is one bearing that is really expensive, it is the one near the pinion gear, somewhere in the later land rovers they changed the bearing and it is cheaper to replace, but the rest of the diff is the same and will interchange. You wont know untill its dismantled, some one may have changed it in the past.

Driveshafts are generally rebuildable, ujoints are easily replaced, worn splines can be replaced as well as the ujoint eyes, but there might be second hand ones about as an easier option.

Be carefull with front springs yes all will fit but some have the clamps in a different place and these ones foul the steering rods in some conditions. Use the originals to compare.

Use Penetrol inside and out to protect your chassis. Its better that fish oil.

Cheers Steve
