So I have a noisy rear diff on overrun (again) and this time i just want to replace with a used diff and swap in my maxidrive center

Will a 96 4.6HSE rear diff drop straight in with my maxidrive? that's what i can find locally...

Do You have salisbury or rover diff in the back?

Pretty sure the last time I went through this exercise it was a "p38" diff, 2002 defender

Hello Duarte19,

I have a complete new rear salisbury diff assembly for a 110 / defender,
new diff, new axels, new drums(not disc's) new brakes, complete new in its crate.
Very inexpensive. Cheers.

Except it looks like a 6x6 rear end. It's missing the casting for the A frame. ;)

Well the ratio is 3.54 so I cant see why not, but always found it easier to rebuild the existing diff correctly (bearings, crown wheel & pinion as required) than finding a rear diff out of a P38A. You also have the chance that the used diff you put it will also end up failing.

Slightly off topic, you mention "noisy rear diff again".... not knowing the details, I find it odd there are so many issues relating to the repair of this diff, as in numerous replacements (on the same Defender) or diff becoming noisy again, or the noise never removed. As diffs go they aren't rocket science to get right.

Hello Duarte19,

Looks like a series backend to fit leaf springs, and not the later Defender fit.

Does the box have a part number attached to it? It may be to fit a Stage one with a 3.5 ratio diff and the overall width then would be narrower.

Been there done that.

It won't last long. The pinion is too short to be properly supported by the bearings, especially with the loads a Maxidrive imposes.

It's not a drop in either, the P38 is "flipped over", so a specialist needs to set it up to run the right way again.

Mine tore the crownwheel teeth out at the root.

That's because it's a series 3 salisbury diff.
