What is it with doing work on your car on Saturday? I went to do the injector seals on my Defender. I took the rocker cover bolts out and then promptly tipped the cover over and spilled all of the little top hat spacers in the cover into the engine bay. All 13 of them! I then spent an hour finding them all as I was paranoid that I had dropped them into the engine. Doh!
So after a late start I fineally removed all the injectors and replaced the seals and copper washers. I couldn't find fault with the seals or copper washers but I've done 170,000km so just wanted to preempt possible problems. The job went smoothly from there. I have to say thanks the Justin Cooper for posting the tip to remove the fuel pump fuse and turn the engine over to expel the fuel that leaked into the cylinders. That worked a treat.
I had to prime the fuel lines three times and then it started with a splutter and smoothed out nicely.
Once I was happy it was fine I ran till warm and changed the oil and filters.
I don't know if I'm trying to convince myself of something but it feels more responsive.
I had some time left and also replaced the front vent flap seals with the older type as I hope that will help with the water leaks in that area. It's started to leak quite badly into the front foot wells lately so I'm chasing that. I have a few splits in the windscreen seal so I'm going to replace that shortly. If it's still bad I think I'll have to remove the dash crash pad and the grey trim and water test the bulk head.
Now I just have to get the guts up to do the clutch in the driveway. I've accumulated all the parts including seals for the GB and TC so that should make for a great weekend! Anybody got a free weekend? Any takers, no. No one!
Why is it you get a great deal of pleasure from working on your own car? When I worked in the trade I hated working on my own car. But now I quite enjoy it.
