View Full Version : TD5 silicon hoses and intercooler...thoughts please...

Hey all,

I've seen some info on this on another TD5-related thread, but just wanted some other owners' input. I de-EGR'd my D2 a while back, and I've also removed the middle silencer in place of a straight pipe. Both mods made a noticeable difference to the performance (but mostly, a noticeably louder 'bark' with the straight pipe!), so now I'm looking at going with silicon hoses.

Just a question to those that have already done this...is it better to flush the intercooler through first, before fitting the silicon hoses? Mine's on 207k km's and I don't reckon it's ever been touched, so I daresay it's dirty!

Aside from playing with the boost and chipping the thing to within an inch of it's life, are there any further mods for getting the best out of this excellent lump?

Also, mine has had the injector harness replaced at some point in it's life, but looking at the ECU the other day, I noticed there's oil on the red plug again. Is this leaning towards yet another replacement harness?

Mine was de-EGR'd a while ago, but when I removed the old D2 intercooler it was a bit oily. The replacement D2A cooler was also a little oily so I cleaned it before fitting and it was a little grubby. I flushed with Kerosene and then soapy water.

For the little work to clean it I'd say yes, give it a good cleaning. It can be done in place or removed.

As for the silicone hoses just make sure you get the right ones. :wasntme:

They are different for ACE Discos and NON ACE Discos. So I now have a set NON ACE that don't fit. ;)

PS. mine seems to go better and more economical after intercooler upgrade/clean and silicone pipes.

Ah great, thanks for the info Kym. :)

My next question was going to be 'in place or out'. I guess the removal would be more worthwhile for a thorough clean through.

Well I was changing it as well but not that hard.

Special tool and most useful is a long phillips head screw driver, mine is about 60cm long...

i bought "Roose Motorsports"silicone hoses from the Uk. they were a scratch over $300 but at the time they were the only set I could find that included the MAF to Turbo inlet hose, which is what had failed on my D2a.

I also requested that the IC to Inlet Manifold hose was made 70mm longer (to which the agreed at no extra cost) as I had read on another forum that someone had trouble with them being slightly too short.

my recomendation if going with the Roose Hoses would be to get the MAF to Turbo hose mad about 20/30mm longer as its slightly under tension when fitted.

I will be looking at their Silicone Coolant hoses in the future also.

Before I replaced my old intercooler with an Alisport job I cleaned and flushed my old one insitu, first with degreaser , then hot soapy water / then metho , to to dry it out and between flushes I used a garden blower taped to the inlet pipe, worked beautifully but made a hell of a mess to the surroundings :)
