As in the Title. has anyone modified the TJM Step Up style roof rack to fit around the Factory Rails. I don't want to remove them as we use them for the surf boards when the big rack isn't fitted.

I am thinking about cutting around it and welding in extra bits around the rails.

Cheers

Keep me posted mattg. I'm considering the same to get the rack back further as i'm mounting a roof top tent to it.

G'day matt, I have a tjm roof rack , not sure if its a step up roof rack ??? The roof rack fits above the original racks ,and may have been modified by the previous owner.I know he had a roof top tent ,and was modified for that with one side cut down.Have got some photo's if that helps ,cheers mark

Mine is similar to this but it has a step down on the side rails. The deck itself is actually level and full length.

The front of yours has only 2 bars, while mine has 3. I figured i'd be able to cut the front lowest bar to fit over the roof rails.

Also the back of mine has a gap on the drivers side. The top back rail finishes and leaves about a 300mm gap between the rear rail and the long side. I assume for a ladder, however the factory ladder mounts on the other side.

My plan was to remove the shorter back top rail and the front lower rail. The rear one in order to fit the roof top tent at the rear and the front to allow the roof rack itself to slide far enough back in the gutter to allow the rear door open but not hit the ladder of the roof top tent.

Picked it up yesterday we just cut all the cross bars off the front and bottom rail and I will weld them back on the top rail in the front. I think this will almost make the deck flat . I am thinking about cutting the whole top rail off the rear section. Mine is a steel gal rack and darn heavy so cutting a bit of steel out seem like a good plan. Do you think removing the top rail will warp the rack? 93008

Hi Matt. Looks good. I have one of the TJM non stepped half length ones - very strong , and heavy.
When you consider that the base runs full length along both gutters and the strength of the uprights, I reckon the only way you will warp the rack is if you warp your roof.

I've got the exact same rack except in black. And yes they are damn heavy! :D Would you be able to take a picture of where you cut it? I didn't realise it wouldn't fit over the D2 roof rails. Haven't tried fitting it up yet though. Did you notice any wind noise with it fitted?

Cheers

Chris
