Hi All,
I was wondering if you can get the following in brass?

LR part no- 247124 - core plug 1'' diameter X 2
LR part no - 52615 - core plug 1 1/8'' diameter X 1

The above is for a 1954 2L engine.
Anyone know where to get the above in brass? Any part numbers?

Thanks

Hi Thomo

We found a whole bunch of brass core plug cups in imperial sizes at a local auto parts store Peps. The particular store has been around for probably 30 or 40 years and the plugs were old stock, just sitting on the shelf.

My advice would be to look for that sort of store in your area. Don't bother with people like SuperCheap.

Get a bit of 1 1/8th brass stock and take it down to the local "Men's Shed" if you have one and see if there is someone handy on a lathe that can knock you up some.

Cheers, Mick.

G'day,
I buy all my Brass Core Plugs from "Precision International" at Silverwater, Sydney. (PRECISION | All your engine needs (http://www.precisionintl.com)). They have all imperial sizes and are nice to deal with. All the good engine builders buy from these people.

Thanks,
Not too many old stores or anything old in Darwin but will try.
What is the thread? Is it BSF or something strange

The cup type core plugs (some people wrongly call these welch plugs) in the sides and rear of the block do not have any threads.
The ones that do have a thread are the solid aluminium plugs adjacent the exhaust manifold. I believe that these are BSP (British Standard Pipe) or similar tapered thread. You can buy the rod at engineers supplies, like Precision mentioned above.

if it is the ones i think it is (the ones under the manifold?) then they are 1" british std conduit i thought, but i certainly don't know for sure.

i had some made up for the 2.25l engines but they are shouldered and won't fit the 2ltr donk

Thanks Diana,
I have found the cup plugs you refer to in the parts book you refer to, I had overlooked them

Item 23 - Cup Plug - LR pn - 236988

Unfortunately it does not state their diameter?
Anyone know what it is?
Thanks

Open out to a bigger size and find/make a plug to suit.

Problem will be the cost of a tap to cut a one-off thread. Do you know someone who has access to large BSP taps ? BSP plugs are available (not sure about brass in the bigger sizes though).

Thanks Colin, that's what I thought I would have to do. I will be rebuilding the engine next year so I will find an engine builder and talk to them, they should have some idea of options.

The big cup plugs are usually 1-15/16" or 50mm. Tomo, ask me about Kennons next time we're talking. They've been around since the 1950's doing that sort of stuff, some of it is getting a little rarer as time goes on though.
