View Full Version : 2015 Disco-last of the Mohicans?

Is the 2015 Disco the last of the square design?
As with all the models, the last has the least bugs.
The 1998 TDI 300 was better than the previous 200.
The D2a was the best of the D2s.
The D3 was a test model for the D4, culminating in the current Discovery.
This may be the last chance for a spacious amazing Disco.
And just watch the modifications that will come in the Disco Sport, who would be brave enough to buy the first one?

Discovery 4 will be around until about 2017.
Discovery Sport IS a smaller vehicle & is a replacement for the Freelander so no comparison.

That is why I upgraded from the 2010 to the 2015 model. I was worried what they may do to the first versions of the D5. I also like the space and towing capacity of the D4. I suspect the next generation will be lighter so may not tow as well although I'm sure it will be rated at the same 35000/350kg. I like the space in the D4 and in order to get the round aero body I suspect we will loose some interior load space.

Could all be wrong... in which case I may just have to buy a D5 in 2020... if I can afford it and they have sorted out the bugs....

I just wanted to point out that the first versions of a new model, (round or square, large or small) are always problematic. The last ones before a new design are the best.
What info do you have that D4 will last to 2017?

They also devalue the fastest so may be a better used buy.

The last in a model is not necessarily the best, yes they should have the build bugs sorted out, but during the model life manufacturers relentlessly chase cost down targets and this frequently means a degradation in the quality of the vehicle, it is usually only small increments, but they all add up. For example there may be several revisions to the NVH package over the life of the vehicle, and each change may result in a small, barely noticeable negative change, but if you compare the first and the last iteration, it can be quite significant, but very few people would have that opportunity.
Having said that, there are also lots of upside, manufacturers are able to introduce running changes for problems that the market has found that the testing program has not, but not always hence the reason forums like this and those who contribute to them are so great.

Peterj...i agree that they look to maximise profits as a model moves towards end of life. They will look for cost savings. Maybe component suppliers are doing the same. That is why i purchased now rather than in 2016 or 2017.

I will have to wait and see if that turns out to be the right decision.

So far every new model Disco has been a significant improvement over the previous one. Why should the next one be any different?

Look at the current RRS. It is a quantam leap over the previous one. Half a tonne lighter and more spacious inside - plus it performs better both on and off road. If the Disco goes the same way it can only be a good thing.

As well as that, if the Disco moves too far upmarket (which it may do for me) there'll be a better range of Defenders to choose from.

Cheers,
Jon

I'm in two minds on this. On the one hand, you'd rather have the last of a given model run IF you can get it at a very, very good run out price.

However, as soon as those nice new looking D5's start hitting the roads, your 1 year old D4 starts to look dated even though it new.

The jump from the D3 to D4 wasn't as dramatic, and I still reckon the 3's look great, but the D5 will be noticeably different.

Then i'd have to contend with looking enviously at every D5 I see. I should try to less shallow!

LR has already announced that the D5 will use the same platform as the RRV/RRS including being built on the same production line, so it wont be an enhanced D4.

The run-out D2s had items deleted, eg no water sensor on the filter and no insulation on the roof, so last isn't always best.
