Just had a new set of tyres fitted to my 2011 D4 to day
The fitter said he had trouble with the nuts as the stainless cap on the nuts are getting rounded or swollen .......he said before I go to any remote location I should have the nuts replaced
I have read on this forum that nut problems are quite common with D4 nuts
Landrover quoted me $ 35 per nut ........that's nuts !!
I have heard you can get solid steel wheel nuts that don't have the problems of swelling ,stripping or distortion that the stainless capped ones do
Anyone got any suggestions where I could solid steel nuts that would fit at a reasonable price
Many thanks

Only use a 6 point socket with wide flats, 12 point sockets can cause them to swell.

I recently had the same problem. I couldn't get the wheel wrench over two nuts without a hammer. I will try a socket.

22mm impact socket works well. Bears on the flats and doesn't distort, but is a tight fit.

Thanks guys .......looks like the tyre place must have been having problems witha 12 pointed socket
I used the 6 pointed landrover wheel wrench ( that comes in original kit ) this morning and was able to loosen up all the wheel nuts and retighten them no problems .......so I'm happy with that .......looks like when the stainless steel caps on the nuts get damaged a 12 pointer can slip on them ........but the 6 pointer gets a good grip ........( at the moment )
I also put a little axel grease on the nuts to make them esier to undo and tighten
And this seems to help
Just did not want to find in middle of some isolated place that I could not get them off
Thanks again for the various inputs ........helped a lot

The 12 pointer will damage the nut cover so the impact socket (six sided socket) won't fit any more. That happened to me last year in a remote place and all I could do was destroy the steel cover with a chisel so that I could get a smaller impact socket to fit and remove the nut. If they are damaged they should be replaced before you get into that predicament. It is very difficult to get the cover plate off the nuts and you end up damaging the nut underneath as well.

Thanks bob ......what is an impact socket .....is that the air or power driven one ........I have always used the landrover 6 point wrench to remove the nuts and never had an issue .....but the problem seems to be at the tyre places who uses 12 pointer
Will look to fit some new nuts ......that I can get from UK at reasonable price ....

Sockets made for impact drivers are six sided so that they fit the nuts perfectly to handle the impact forces. I have a set of these sockets from Repco and they are good substitutes for the Land Rover tyre wrench if you want to use a longer half inch drive handle and a socket. Never ever use a standard 12 point socket on these wheel nuts or they rapidly get out of shape.

Hi Guys in respect to the wheel nut steel caps has anyone had these as a cause of rattle on rough corrugated gravel roads?

Ian

Tyre shops, 12 point sockets, rattle guns.
Nuff said.

Check out Roverlord on this forum. I haven't bought mine yet, but I note they are a lot cheaper than $35 a hit.

If your tyre shop is using regular sockets (12Point) then it's time to change tyre shops.
TBH I would be surprised if they are, very surprised! It was probably an inexperienced staff member using an imperial socket.

In short, yes, but only with the window down.
