Yesterday I was taking my grandson for a driving lesson , We had been out for about an hour , and on the way home . When he said pop there's steam coming out for there , just in front of him . Looked over at the Temp Gauge and It sat just below centre . I said keep going as we were almost home . Any way popped the bonnet and there was no expansion cap on the bottle ! But there It was sitting on top of the rocker cover ! It's a td5 and has no cowl , just aluminum rocker . What amazed me is I haven't looked under the bonnet for about 2 weeks , the last time I did a check . I have been running around local most day's . How It never slipped off is a mystery to me , as It just sat there . I let It cool down 3 lts water and all was well . Been driving It today , and all seems well . I can't ever remember leaving to cap off of any vehicle before , I must be getting old !!.. Jim

You topped up with 3 litres! :o

I would recommend for all Td5's a low coolant alarm.

Hi Slunnie , I agree . I was lucky I can't believe I left the cap off ! But I did and was lucky . 3 lts is quite a bit ,fortunately there was still 10 lts in the system . I wouldn't wont to be going much lower . Since I topped It up , I've drove quite a few kl. and It is running sweet as . I be the first to say you don't wont to be doing a head gasket , or even a head on a td5 . Jim

You're not wrong Jim, except as we speak that's exactly what the ol' Td5 jalopy of mine is getting. :(

I don't envy you mate , So are you getting the head gasket changed , or the head , which means gasket anyway . Ether way your up for some good $$. Are you getting It done local , I know here in Melbourne there are a lot of workshops , not to many want to touch the td5s !!..

The head gasket definately which is $3k with a new injector loom. They will test the head when its apart, and if it needs a new head its another $2k for a new bare head + building it up. No, not getting it done locally, I want guru expertise on it. I've taken it down to Sydney at Davis Performance Landys.
