Guys,
I am trying to help my boss who has just been told she needs a new engine in her 99 Freelander. Quote was for $7800. Is this OK? Seems a bit steep for my liking.....any advice gladly taken
Thanks heaps

Why do you need a new engine? - why not a second hand one or reconditioning - try Triumph and Rover Spares in Lonsdale South Australia - (08) 8384 6933 - they are quoting about $3200 for a good 1800 long engine and just a little more for a diesel.

She has been told by the mechanic that the vavles are most likely bent and if they pull the engine down the sleeves may shift and it may make the whole thing worse. I can't understand how they can make a diagnosis without pulling the engine down???? It is at John McGrath Ford in Phillip. Any advice will be taken as to who to take it to or what to do.
Thanks

Me smells the "let's take the sheela for a ride" scam here.....she needs a second opinion and from someone LR friendly.
Look in the recommended suppliers for NSW and see if anyone is close. Even NRMA can provide advice if she's a member.

I am in Canberra - I wouldn't have thought that John McGrath, a Ford dealer - would know anything about Landrovers - I couldn't recommend Rolfe Landrover also in Philip (just down the hill from the Ford Dealer) - they will charge you $115 per hour and rip you off for parts. Canberra Motor Works in Mitchell is a Landrover Specialist but in all honesty I also could not recommend them as they have had my Discovery a couple of times and I wasn't happy with them at all - but they do work on Freelanders - just beware. Some may recommend Morwood Motors in Fyshwick who are also a Landrover Specialist - but not Freelanders - they reckon they are too much like hard work.
Not a lot of options I am sorry - one suggestion though is to contact the ACT MG Car Club - MGFs have the same engine and they may know who is good with the engines.
I recently had major problems with my drive train in my Freelander and I couldn't get help anywhere in Canberra - the guys on this website were the best help
MR in Brisbane were helpful
Graeme Coooper in Sydney were good
Ritters in Melbourne were OK
AVM in Melbourne were OK
Ended up getting my parts from Triumph and Rover in Lonsdale SA.
Google also helped a lot!!
Sorry I cannot be more helpful

Everyone likes convenience.... however can the vehicle be driven albeit slowly ?
With bent valves it won't be happy but I would think should run, probably cough and stumble alot, so long as your careful should make the trip. ie just poke along rather than haul keeping the revs low.
Maybe it is worth a shot at toddling it up to Sydney (Graeme Cooper), drop it off Friday, spend the night in the city then toddle back to ACT Saturday.
8 Grand is a lot for such a little motor. Toddle up to Syd's and back should come in way under that probably a rebuild included.

Ah yes but the question is - why are the valves bent - most likely because the timing belt has broken - but I do agree that Coopers would be a better bet than anyone I know of in Canberra - the cost of transport on the back of a truck - particularly as back haul to Coopers in Sydney is still going to be relatively cheap compared to the overall cost of repair.
I have had just another thought - you could try Berco in Mitchell (6241 6666) www.berco.com.au They are not a landrover specialist but a engine rebuilder - these are a big time company that do everything on site. I have had good experience with them with my Jaguar V12 engine and I know they are capable to in doing any sort of engine in fact most local engineering companies (even McGrath Ford) sub-contract engine engineering work to them - if I remember they are not the cheapest around but their prices are competitive and their work is top notch.
For the sake of a local phone call - it might be worth it.

at that price it sounds like its the TD4 motor - I can thoroughly recommend Queanbeyan Diesel Service - THE best machanics in the Canberra region and not just for diesel tuning work. Mick will look after her...her car I mean...
