View Full Version : Auto trans suit Defender

Warren at MR had a Td5 backed by an HSE auto gearbox - a conversion that they did themselves. The HSE suits that engine well, I'm told, given it's strength etc.
This got me thinking - what auto gearbox could be swapped in to a 200Tdi Defender ?
Was the same auto box fitted to both the 200 and 300Tdi Discoverys ?
(I know the manual gearboxes are different and the box from a 300Tdi is not a bolt up proposition to a 200Tdi engine?
This has really got me curious, at least as an intellectual excercise.
(unless, that is, someone has a suitable box and linkages going soare).

Not strictly true....
The R380 is essentially based on the same design as the earlier box and you can retro fit the R380 to a 200TDi without much agro (IIRC). That said... You have to remember that the layout of the 200TDi is different on the Defender compared to the Disco.
With that in mind, you should be able to fit the auto box to either engine though I suspect that the 300TDi will probably be easier. I think the main thing you have to work out is what to do about the oil cooler.

If you are going to put an auto on i surgest the best is the 300 TDi Auto as this makes it go like a rocket compaired to the 200 TDi one

Why ? Do you mean the engine gearbox combo or is the gearbox fitted to the 200 and the one fitted to the 300 different :?: If so, how :?:
I wouldn't;t change the 200Tdi engine for a 300Tdi (too much cost for no gain) so would the later box bolt up to the 200 engine :?:

What i mean't was that for some reason , don't have the figures on me at the moment but
200 TDi to 200 TDi auto box OK
300 Tdi to 300 TDi Auto box OK
200 Tdi with 300TDi Auto Fantasic
Lot better tha the others. Know serveral people who have done this and found it to be alot better

Any ideas on a suitable auto to fit into a TD5 Extreme? Just a thought as it would be so much more driveable.

Warren from MR had a HSE gearbox fitted to his TD5 ute. He said these are much stronger than the 'others' (I presume by others he meant the autos from TD5 discos). I'm sure if you gave him a call he'd let you know.
Cheers

Why ? Where is the oil cooler normally (on the Discos) and why won't it fit there on the Defenders ?

Hmm, the P38A (HSE which I drive) has the diffs offset to the opposite side from the Defenders/Rangie classics/Disco 1 (not sure about D2). The output from the transmission is also offset to the opposite side.
The Defs etc, have the diff offset to the RHS, the P38A is offset to the left (as viewed from the driver's seat)

IIRC - It's in the radiator assy (I don't think it's a seperate unit). You've got a greater surface area to work with on the Disco as the engine bay & grille are larger than the Def.

That is only because the transfer case is different, the auto is still inline with the crankshaft. A zf from a disco td5 would be a good swap.

As far as I can gather the bellhousing on the 200tdi and 300tdi are different lengths ( ? ) which would mean new mounts would need fabricating for the auto box and a different tailshaft lenght.
Or am I way off.

I thought that the other problem is that the HSE auto is electronic?
Where as the others are just normal ZF's?
:?

The TD5 is electronically controlled so maybe its done that way?
Who knows?
Warren does. Ring him.
See MR Automotive in the Recommended Suppliers - Qld section.
Warren is the owner.
