Levelling Headlights

Hi All,

Has anyone fitted the headlight levelling parts from an SVX into an older defender? I noticed that they are not all that expensive and combined with a sprayer would make for legal HID / LED headlight fitment.

No they wouldn't... "Self levelling" not manual levelling.

HID really isn't an upgrade... Cut off is too sharp!

Yes, sorry I should have mentioned that too - There is a Hella kit that replaces the manual switch with an auto controller. It has an ultra sonic sensor that detects changes and adjusts the headlight level.

Could well be too much of a pain and not suitable for offroad, though.

Gotta say, I really can't see any significant difference when I alter the headlight levelling switch on my Defender. I parked it in the street at night and tried it on the various settings and came away puzzled. Does it actually make any difference?

If anyone is after a complete levelling system from a Limited edition I'm wrecking a whole 90 .

Mine makes a huge difference! Funny that this came up - I just played with the switch the other night:angel:. Quite amazing how much the headlight level changes. I tested it both out on the road at night and parked about 10' from the garage door.

Hmmm, maybe I'll have to try it again. Is that on high or low beam?
I just leave the switch on the top position.

It doesn't seem to have any effect with High Beam, only on low beam (normal Beam), from what I have experienced. Position 3 doesn't seem to do much, but positions 1 & 2 make a significant difference.. I leave it on position 0 mostly (Default Setting).

You also might want to check that the motors haven't seized as I did find mine caked in mud one time and needed to be cleaned to get them to work again. I do notice the change in light when they are working.

The motors take a little time to adjust so you can't just flick between the various settings, you need to select and leave it for a few seconds and you should see the motors slowly move the headlights. That's my experience anyway.

OK, I'll try it again this weekend on low beam in a place without street lights and see what happens. The vehicle has only done 60,000 km of mostly on-road work and the underneath is as clean as new so I doubt if mud is a problem, but thanks for the advice.
