We are heading down to the Village for a small parade, in the Aussie 101 forward control. Last year the parade was small but the people were certainty not, a massive crowd:)

Hopefully this year for the 100th will have a bigger crowd:)

What are you folks doing?

Planning to be at the dawn service - the first time for Sunbury, then a BBQ and drinks. I got asked if I was a local down at Victor Harbour as they wanted the 101 in their parade.:D

I drove my 101 in the local parade on Sunday. We have it the week before so they can go to the parade in Melbourne.

So, they want a 101 in the Victor parade. I might have to organise to put one of mine over there.

This year will be the first without Nan's Dad Wal who passed last September. It is going to be a tough one for her and her Mum but we will be at the dawn service standing in his spot.

Marching at the Dawn service & main march Sandgate, then breaking from routine and not getting on the grog with the usual suspects, but going home , buying pizzas, and watching the 5 games of Rugby League with the family. A few cleansing ales may be partaken.

This year, being the 100th anniversary, we are making a wreath , incorporating rosemary from our bush, to remember Great Grandfather who served in the 49th Battalion in France , Grandfather who served in the 49th Battalion alongside his father , and Dad, who served in the 2/14th Battalion fighting the Japanese, WW2. Couldn't find Great Grandads photo, but have the other two. We will place the wreath beneath the name of Mum's uncle Jack Shepherd, MM, KIA Korea. A bit rough, the wreath, not like the politicians ones, but it will do us. Bob

I'm thinking of going to the dawn service at Helensburgh, my mother served(WAC) and my Grandfather(so I just found out) served in WWI with the British, although not recognised because when he returned in 1918, he joined the IRA in 1919 and was involved in the Easter uprising, which eventially led to Irelands freedom from the British in 1921/22.

Along time ago now when I was in my early twenties I would take my Jeep down to Wollongong ANZAC march with other old army truck club members.
We would give diggers a ride.......the ones who couldnt walk the distance.
The Wollongong march was a long one.
The first few years I was riding a motor bike or taking different diggers in my jeep.
One year I was asked if I could pick up a digger from his home not far from the centre of Wollongong, which I did.
He turned out to be a great war digger with no family living by him self , just making ends meet.
Dressed in a clean, but every old suit, a few medals.
ANZAC day was his big day every year, he had nothing else.
The first year we didn't talk that much, I dropped him off at the RSL with some other diggers and they talked over some beers etc.
Later I picked him up and took him home.
I did this because he seemed like a good bloke, couldnt drive and lonely.......no family etc.
Four years in running I did this and every year we talked a bit more and longer.
Finally one year we shared beers at the RSL and I manage to get a few stories and thruths about the great War and what he did and the friends he lost...........it took time and trust for him to talk to me about it.
I was a good day and the ice was broken .......the old bloke to the young bloke.
The year after that I waited at his house at the usual time.......no one came and a for sale sign on the house.
Ron.

PS

I do the local Nowra march with my Studebaker giving the WW2 blokes a ride..........sadly they are now joining their war mates more and more every year.

That's doing it tough. It would have been a miracle to survive the Burma railway - I've been there and seen what it was like. Incidentally, on the subject of that railway I recommend the movie 'The Railway Man' with Colin Thiele and Nicole Kidman. It was filmed on the site and I've seen the place where it was filmed so its authentic. Its a true story too. You might like to rent it to watch this weekend if you're looking for a good movie relevant to Anzac Day.

I am in Turkey at the moment and have done the required pilgrimage at ANZAC Cove and walked (climbed / descended) the ground from the Nek to Shrapnel Valley cemetery. Looking forward to ANZAC day itself but am somewhat relieved that I won't be at the actual ceremony (that's another story).

Very moving to actually be there on the ground. God only knows the suffering those guys endured.

Keeping my eye out for Landy's. Have seen plenty of military Defenders one Freelander and one RR Sport. Not seen as single Disco of any description.

Colin Firth it was, yes it was a great and very moving movie and really brought to me what it would have been like for my Grandad.
Unfortunately he died before i was born, not long after i turned 18 i went to visit my grandmother in Hobart.
When she saw me she burst into tears because i am a spitting image of my grandfather, when i see photo's of him its quite eerie looking at yourself.

Hello Mate ,

My Father went in the bag at Singapore and survived the Railway, just. I think you can only get replacement medals from the Government if you are the original recipient. Otherwise , you would have to purchase them from a private firm.

I'm undecided whether to go into Sydney for the big march or to watch the local one. Probably local as I hate Sydney.

EDIT: It seems there won't be a local march (except from the RSL to the memorial) so it looks like I'll be going to Sydney.

I'm going to miss wearing my Grandfather's medals at the Waddy Point dawn service this year unfortunately.

Instead I'll be at a ceremony being held at the Maheno Wreck on Fraser Island. The original bell from the wreck has been returned to Maryborough, Queensland to have several replicas cast before it returns to its usual home at the Maheno State School in the SE of the south island of NZ. One replicas will be on display at the Maritime Museum in Brisbane and the other week be at Happy Valley on the island.

My 5 year old daughter will proudly wear her Great Grandfather's medals in our local parade matching with her school classmates.

May you all have a great day.

Attended the Dawn Service at Gelibolou (Turkey). This was basically the second tier for those who could not get to the main one at ANZAC cove. Very well done and quite moving with around 3000 in attendance.

Aussie Surf Boats rowing ashore in the darkness, a very good high school band and an outstanding choir from Australia added to the occasion. The organisation must have required a lot of effort by many who no doubt spent considerable time and effort getting this together.

Our Turk hosts were excellent and the Mayor of Gelibolou gave a very well considered speech.

All in all glad I have walked the ground over the last week and attended the Dawn Service.

Our school had a very moving ceremony on Thursday morning. Saw some students in tears as they watched videos from Gallipoli.
Then got up for the dawn service at Maleny. Big crowd blocked the main road and overflowed. Lots of kids there early. Very simple and appropriate I thought.
Then, as dawn had not actually arrived after it was over, we went home to sleep in.
Glad to see no politicians involved as my opinion is it should not be about them.
