Hi kaistuff, you are sure as hell having some fun.
Start by running your motor and measuring the voltage across the terminals of the battery.
Now get your revs up a bit and see if there is any change.
depending on how low the battery is, there should be a slight rise in voltage.
Then turn your headlights on and measure the volts at the battery again.
If there is little or no change in voltage then I think you may have a stuffed battery.
If there is a large drop then you may still have a problem with the alternator or your voltage reg.
This is just a point of reference and you may need to see an auto elec and get the battery load tested.
Cheers.
PS How long did you drive the vehicle before decided the battery was not being charged.

Hi drivesafe
the voltage drop on the batteries terminals is only .1V
withe headlights on drop ts .2V
h beam another .2V
diving lights another .2V
starting at 12.9V
drive for about 5 min
turn every thing of voltage is back to 12.8 to 12.9
r****** engine to ~3000 rpm no change in voltage out put on the alternator
12.9 V be for and at revs
?????????????????????????????????????????????????? ????????????????

OK... A couple of pointers for you:
1 - Is the battery dash warning light working? If not, the alternator will not charge. How to test? Just turn the ignition key to the point where the lamp should be lit.
2 - The alternator requires a +12v feed to tell it to charge. Without this, you can turn it all you want but it won't charge. Check the wiring to make sure that's happening. To test, just connect the terminal on the alternator to the battery while the engine is running. If that is the problem, it should suddenly kick in.

Ahh but are you sure the alternator is earthed as some use rubber bushes that act like insulators.

Well... The ship carrying the 110 should have arrived today so assuming I can get it out of customs in time (do we have any useful contacts here??) then I hope to be along on the weekend.
Failing that, I'm in town for the next 4 weeks so I'm sure we could arrange something.

A fully charged battery will have 12.7-12.9 volts with the ignition turned OFF.
Within a few minutes of starting the engine the voltage at the battery terminals should be 13.9-14.5 volts with no headlights or accessories on, because an alternator must charge at 14.5 volts to charge a 12 volt battery.
If you only have 12.9 volts with the engine running the battery will never charge. There is something wrong with your alternator or the charging circuit.
A battery is only an energy storage device. Once the engine starts the car electrical system relies on the alternator to run everything and maintain the battery.
As others have suggested maybe you have not connected the exciter which goes through the dash bulb,. If the dash light goes on at ign turn on and off while running then generally your earths are OK, as the bulb measures the difference in electricity between the alternator and the battery.
The most likely explanation is a damaged alternator.

Just a thought . If your battery is below 12 volts with the ignition off, then it will take an average alternator at least an hour to fully charge it., so you should maybe run it for some time to see if the battery will charge .
A worn out battery will show 13.9-14.5 volts quite quickly, but a new battery will take some time. In my case the my volt meter will show something like 13.6 volts for about 1/2 hour .
So maybe just give it time.

Hi kaistuff, are you sure you are reading the multi meter correctly or more to the point, are you taking your readings from a sound location.
The reason I ask is that for your battery to be at 12.6 or more, the alternator and voltage reg have to be operating at at least 13.8 and it doesn’t matter what sort of battery you have, again for the battery to read 12.6, it is fully charged and to get any vehicle battery to a fully charged level, your vehicle has to be putting out 13.8 minimum.
Even if this reading was taken while the motor is running, the battery would still go flat pretty quickly if the vehicle was only putting out 12.6 or what ever.
Another explanation might be that you have an intermittent fault where your vehicle does produce the 14 volts for a time.
Cheers and have fun finding that problem.

Hi all
another 2 hr in the garage 8) and i have located the problem
Regulator is not working
So when i bypassed the regulator i had the ignition light style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif
and after starting the engine the multimeter rose to about 14.3 volts
be for i turned the engine of style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif
but had no luck getting a new regulator to day style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif
River do you have a spare one :?: :?: :?:
will get one tomorrow and then it will be fixed style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif
(my old alternator had the same problem )
now i have 80 Amp instead of 25 Amp style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif
thanks for all the grate advise and help
till the next problem
thanks Kai
