Folks,
Successfully purchased a replacement Key Fob for the D3 off eBay and had programmed by the local locksmith for a lot less than what Land Rover will quote and without the long delay waiting for a pre-cut key to be sent from the UK.
When I bought the car it only came with one key, so figured I better sought out a spare quick smart.
The Key with transponder was purchased from Amalgamated Locksmiths in Newstead QLD via eBay for $220 and sent to me here in Perth. I then had the local locksmith at Prestige Lock at Port Kennedy WA cut the key and then program the transponder for $120.
For those in Brisbane, Amalgamated can also program the new key. The locksmith I used also said that most locksmiths would now have the same programmer as himself, so should be plenty of options for people and you don't need a LR service place to program.
Was impressed with the young fellow who cut the key as he did a test cut first using a Ford key blank, made sure it would work in the locks (both ignition and door), before cutting the key on the fob. Would not want to get this wrong.
To program their technician brought out a universal transponder programmer which does pretty much any car out of Europe and very simply coded the new key. He even admitted it was his first Discovery 3 he had done and was surprised at how easy it was. No special code or anything needed, just an original working key.
How trouble free was that!
