As subject reads, i want to put 35 Claws on my '86 Rangy... i'm sure there's been topics but i can't find any... can anyone please give me more of an idea of minimum requirements to do this??
I'm assuming 3" Spring and 2" body lift, guard chopping, extended brake lines and maybe maxi axles?
Also, what is involved in changing an axle... in theory, would it be a reasonable practice while saving funds for the maxi's to maybe keep a couple spare normal Rangy axles from a wrecker on the roof rack and change when it snaps?? or do you f*** other stuff as well??
After the cheapest options to start with... looking at 15x10 rims with 35x12.5 Baja Claws.

3' spring and 2' body is more than enough.
you can get away with 2'body on spring, maybe even less
Just cut the crap out of the guards.
10's are pretty much illegal fullstop, where as 8's still have some slight chance of being engineered if you want to.
Also easier to get and cheaper...
Extended brake lines are a good idea otherwise you need to move one of the chassis mounts - but that is really dependant on how much travel you have.
Maxis or Jac Mac are pretty much a given if you want minimum breakage - Maybe even go to Toy centres if you can (heaps stronger)
Make sure you are going to 24spline.
Dave.

Mmmmm. Not sure how you will go with 12.5" wide tyres.
I am running 35x11.5 on my '77 Rangie. It has 2.5" spring lift, 2" body lift and maxidrive axel & locker on rear. It is a 2 door and guards have been cut to the max and I still get a very slight rub.
With 12.5" wide you are going to have to adjust the steering stops A LOT!
It will also be a lot harder to cut the guards on a 4 door but is possible. In the back doors you will end up having to cut into the hollow section which will then have to be fibreglassed or covered in some other way.
Anything is possible as long as you have the money!

3" spring lift and cutt the **** out of the guards
I flared out my front guards using sum pliers style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif
When you wanna come round and i can discuss sum options with you... style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif
I might be able to show you how easy it is to change a rangie axle aswell style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif cause if you inted on burning round on 35s offroad in a rangie your askin for trouble style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif I would suggest strapping an antire diff (disc to disc) so when the one unde rthe vehicle break you just do a diff swap style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif

You can also get away with a 2 inch spring and 2 inch body. 35 inch tyres is pushing it a bit with that configuration, but a bit of guard run won't hurt every now and then.
I'm looking at 33's next with 1 1/2 inch spring and 1 inch body lift. Got to chop into the guards though (when I can afford the LRA flares style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif ).
Maxi's will definatly be on your list, reading 'prioroty' after you start breaking the 10 spline crap.
Good luck with it.

The dunga 3.5 is currently sitting on the garage floor (loose flywheel and replacing the big-end bearings).

you will also find that 35's on stock gearing will suck offroad..
your car will run away from you down steep hills and you will be foot to the floor to get up steepish hills...
it is not a cheap exercise fitting 35+ plus tyres to a vehicle with 3.54 diff gears and axles made of cheese

Absolutley
Remember I run 'tiny' 32's and you can get away with it, but 35's like you stated you start to have issues. Want to go to 33's and this is a big concern, spending money that I don't have style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif

Unless you have the old 4 speed manual box, then it's not a problem. I am running 35's and have no gearing problems in low range. High Range is another story but I just put up with it until I put in the 4.6l

So are you saying the gearing is too tall for 35s with the old 4sp?
Or is it that they are not strong enough?

in my opinion, the gearing will be to tall with any of the LR gearboxes and 3.45 diff ratios...
your 2 options are either change the low range gearing...
or change the diff gearing...

Change diff gearing.
Fixes both high and low range.

If changing the diff ratios you'll need to do some calculations as to what the % increase is in your rolling diameter over standard and then apply that to your diff ratios to work out where you need to be.
Another alternative is to perhaps slot in the transfer case gears from a Defender (std 32s) which, while not a perfect solution to match your gearing, keeps things reasonably straight forward and if you want you can keep a set of 32s on rims to use as road tyres?
