View Full Version : Links to advertisers without clicking

I am becoming extremely annoyed at being taken to advertiser's web sites simply because my mouse curser has passed over an ad in the banner. This is when signed in, so is the advertising banner between the two smaller ones and the actual Forum area.
I will start to take notice of which advertisers they are and will vow to specifically never buy anything from them. I have no problem with the advertisers that require a conscious "click" of the mouse to go to their sites, and will specifically support those if I can. (In fact I have ongoing business with one of the two showing now, in part due to advertising on AULRO:angel:, and probably will with the other one day).

I just went through the motions to try this John and nothing happens on mine without a conscious "click". The IT gurus could elaborate, but maybe a mouse setting on your PC ??

this is the new way of forcing advertising into peoples faces.
if your curser hovers or passes over any portion of the advertising banner it opens automatically.
it is quite annoying....but as the advertisers say , if you don't want to see it , make a conscious to avoid putting your cursor over the banner.
is there an operating system or browser that allows you to see web content without the endless onslaught of advertising?

I'll double check with my web dev guys at work, but as far as I know it is impossible to activate a link by simply mousing over it. I've tried and it doesn't happen for me personally. Are you sure that you don't have a faulty or worn mouse?
Edit: I stand corrected, it's evidently called a "rollover advertisement". Google that and there should be info on how to block it in your browser. Personally though, even after disabling my multiple ad blockers, I can't get it to happen here...

I haven't been able to emulate it.

To clarify, we are taking about this AULRO site ??. This (mouse over) phenomenon does happen to me on the Bigpond site (my ISP) but cannot get it to occur here.

Yep, I'm talking about the AULRO site. It doesn't happen with most of the advertisers, even with the same banner area, so it's something that some specific advertisers have done. I doubt it's a problem with my mouse as it doesn't have similar problem on any other site or with most of the ad banners. Also it seems from other responses that at least two others are aware of the functionality, even if only on other sites.

i think you will find you have an advertising trojan on your system or a browser addon / extension that is providing the click in the background.
i am yet to see a banner that can take you to a site without you clicking on it.
happy to be proved wrong but i haven't seen one as yet that can do it on it's own..

Can you give us some specific examples of the advertisers in question?

Virgin Airlines is one.
it doesnt take you to another site, just opens the ad.

I think there was a Ford ad that did it, but I was refraining from naming it until I could confirm it.
I also probably overreacted to it as I'd also had an evening of pop-ups telling me I need to upgrade my Flash-player on top of my Garmin not being accessible anymore because I need to upgrade the Mac OS.
Maybe I'm naive, but I hoped having a Mac made me less prone to things like Trojans.

It's a java thing.
Used to be the same as the onmouseover that changes your mouse icon or highlights a link/text. Now it's got a function that's tie to a href. Once yo roll over f you have the right version of Java and if you have the right browser and if and if and if then it works.
