View Full Version : Just got my APT sliders installed

I just visited APT and had my sliders with an aluminium step installed.
I was mainly interested in a step but thought getting a slider type step a better option so when Ben mentioned he could do that few months ago in the forum I went for them.
I have to admit dealing with Ben has been a pleasure as well and would have no hesitation in recommending him
I will put some pics up later if you want

You can't just tell us about the new sliders and not provide the evidence:mad:

Looking good Richard. Quick question if I may. Are the lower outer door seals still in place and if so do they still provide a seal?

No they are not there as removed for the bar.
Re other question I believe Tombie has had APT sliders for some time and probably could answer that one better as I have just got them.

Richard,I guess you had to remove the lower sill trim to fit the sliders.
Do the APT sliders extend at the rear into the lower wheel well or did you
have to cut the end off the original trim to fill the gap[mud trap]?

I was slack and got Ben to do the install
I don't believe anything is cut

Don't mean to hijack but thought it might be useful for those in the market... I installed my GOE sliders and compressor guard on the weekend and it might be helpful to have both the compare in the same thread.
I would have seriously considered the APT ones if I was on the east coast, but being local and wanting alloy, GOE were the pick. I thought about adding a step panel, but after inspecting the ones fitted up to Gordon's car decided I didn't need it.
I like the way the compressor guard and sliders match and bolt up together, and as steps they have the tick of approval from wife and 3yo son.
I'm sure for anyone trying to decide, you couldn't go wrong with either option.

The more info the better I reckon
I believe Ben/APT is developing a set of compressor and other under cover protection that go with the sliders as well.

I have followed Richard's lead and had a set of APT sliders with tread plates installed.
Good solid bit of gear, and Ben's proven to be a good fellow to deal with.

Good on you Ron.
Ben if you read this I expect my commission :).
The bottom seals are removed.

Plastic sill trim is removed.
I reckon I'll run some D-seal from Clark Rubber along the slider sill plate to fill the gap. Not that it's really necessary, though.

Very difficult choice given the great offerings from Ben at APT and Brad's Metfit but after much contemplation, well probably dithering really, over which sliders to go for and having pored over the forum for the good oil I decided to go for GOE sliders with standoff bars. In the end the weight difference was the deciding factor.
I also (special) ordered checkerplate infill panels. I've just received them from Gordon. Should get onto the installation this weekend and will post up some pics but here is one quick one:

Don't know but I will get them on the scales before I install them and post the result. Pretty easy to hold in one hand though.

For data purposes:
GOE 2 @ 9.0 - 18kg
APT 2 @ 17.0 - 34kg
Observations:
GOE Slider has a 48% weight saving over APT
GOE slider should have the "end cap" to allow the rear wheel arch liner to be screwed securely.
GOE slider appears that water/mud will pool on the top plate ** happy to be corrected **
APT slider doesn't require modification to front edge of guard
APT has smooth underplate which assists sliding without hooking on outriggers.
APT drains easily - even with step plates as they are perforated.
Both are excellent AUSSIE MADE products. Anyone looking to purchase would do well with either.

Adding a couple of thoughts ....
The smooth underside Tombie mentions is an excellent feature.
Both for sliding over obstacles and also minimising mud/stones flung up towards the doors.
I believe it will also add significantly to the overall strength against side impacts, although the steel tube alone is pretty strong.

It is however more difficult to keep clean compared to no plate. Dirt & dust does collect on its upper surface.
It is free draining but does require a fair bit of hosing to push all dirt out from the edges created between the tube and flat plate.

As an alternative, the step-tread version looks like this:
http://www.aulro.com/afvb/attachments/l319-discovery-3-4/93408d1430534218-just-got-my-apt-sliders-installed-image.jpg
Not sure how good they are with mud etc and cleaning.
I think the GOE deluxe would be better as a step but may be problematic for cleaning (as mentioned).
David has now created a thread specifically for the GOE product:
http://www.aulro.com/afvb/l319-discovery-3-4/242637-new-deluxe-goe-sliders.html
And for reference, this older thread has a lot of good information and mentions a couple of other suppliers as well:

Thanks Scott.
One more small addition to this. During my selection deliberations. Ben at APT advised me as follows (about the APT sliders with the infill panels as per pic above):
"The infills are a very expensive way of doing the job so we don't do them that way anymore.
We've managed to fit tread plates to the sliders now for those that want them.
As far as colour goes, the aluminium was raw so it has that matt light silver look. The alum plates can definitely be powdercoated a darker grey or black though."

Just to add into this as well. Have had my apt sliders with infills on for almost a year and the infills are gradually coming loose and falling off. Haven't had a chance to head back to see Ben yet, but I'm sure he will be as helpful as always. Otherwise, good build quality and off road have worked a treat

Why haven't you just tightened them up?

A friend alerted me to this photo on Instagram of a RRS in America.
It really highlights why rock sliders are a good idea ....

Maybe he could have chosen a different line but then again maybe not.
Cheers,
Scott
