Hi all

I am looking at a RRS tdv8, probably about 2007, just wondering if there is anything obvious to look out for ? Any common issues that we should run away from?
How many km's before major expenses ?

Thanks in advance for any replies

The tdv8 is a nice motor. It doesn't have the expense of the timing belt change every 160,000km like the tdv6. Both the RRS tdv6 & tdv8 will have a similar ZF 6 speed tranny which should be serviced every 100,000 or so to ensure maximum life.

However the tdv8 has twice the number of turbos and EGRs. The tdv8 runs quite hot which some say is a problem in the smaller engine bay of the RRS vs RRV. I don't know how true this is as I've never owned or driven a RRS.

My tdv8 RRV 08MY with a similar ZF 6 speed has 240,000km and goes great. I just put a dose of Active Engine/turbo/EGR cleaner through it which resulted in the motor being smoother and more powerful.

It seems the big thing to look for (like a D3/4) s a complete service history. Owners sometimes delay servicing, I suppose because they are quite expensive with fully synthetic oils etc.

Good luck.

Thanks for your help - basically no massive dramas to be aware of except general abuse ?

Turbo and EGR failure seem to be the main problem with the tdv8. Other than coking up from exhaust recycling there doesn't seem to be any specific explanation or mileage to indicate when they are likely to go. Inter cooler hose failure is another risk area which seems to result in engine problems (possibly over fueling). It's an easy fix if identified before motor problem happens. Look for significant black smoke if you give it a boot full. Mine was starting to show signs of black smoke and little heavier fuel consumption. I suspected hose failure although they were only replaced less than 2 years ago by PO and I couldn't feel any failure to the top hoses. I will take them off to check when I find and hour or two spare. The Active cleaner seems to have fixed the black exhaust. So I'm thinking the EGR etc needed a clean. These motors seem to like hw work rather than short suburban drives.

I can only recall one RRS to have major ongoing dramas and it was a later model 09 or 10MY I think. Most seem very happy with them. Other than the motor they have similarities with the D3. Trawl through the D3/4/RRS section and you will get an idea of what problems can come up.

Please advise the actual product you used?

ZF Services in Sydney recommend a service for the ZF6 in the D3/4/RRS TDV6 every 50,000 to 60,000ks, especially if you do a lot of towing or sand work.

As does my L/R mechanic and Cohuna Automatics too.
It's worth the extra expense, do it!

Thanks. I'll keep that in mind. The last service was done at 100,000 interval and came out looking good. Now it has 240,000 km on it I'll do it again much sooner. Prevention is cheaper than a rebuild.
