Does anyone know if an 18' D3 wheel fits on the rear without spacers?

At a guess I think you are asking if a 18" (that's inch not foot) D3 rim will fit on the rear of a 3.0 D4. The answer is yes. The front requires a 19" (or 18" GOE or RAID) but the rear will take a stock D3 8x18". I've fitted one as proof of concept to use a D3 18" as a second spare. Hell of a lot cheaper than another GOE or RAID. Note though that the D3 is a 53mm offset, same as 19" compared to 44mm for the aftermarket. Of interest the D3 5 spoke dished centre that I have is rated at 940kg compared to 930kg for my D4 original 19"

A LR 18" rim did not fit the rear (nor the front) of a new 2010 RRS when Sniegy and I tried. However I suspect that the 2010 RRS was fitted with the same callipers as the first 3.0 D4s (eg mine) which originally had alloy callipers that caused the pads to squeal if the brakes were used while reversing, but which were superseded by the 2.7 D3/D4 cast iron callipers soon afterwards. Hence if you have an early 3.0 D4 still with the original alloy callipers then the LR 18" rim wont fit but its not expensive to replace the callipers with cast iron versions.

Just be aware that spacers are illegal across Australia unless accompanied by a certificate of compliance from a certified practicing engineer and they are loathe to provide on as spacers move load centres out and have knock on effects with VSC, TRC, ABS et al

I have 5 GOE ATM

That would make buying a set of GOE wheels slightly cheaper if a cheap D3 18" wheel was available for a spare.Sure there is a 50% chance of having to double swap the flat tyre if it was a front flat.
Will try and download this to the my ECU and start looking for a spare;););););)

One could get away with 4 Compomotive rims and 2 LR 18" rims.

You have two legal alternatives;
Buy a tyre changer(ie) tyreplyers or R & R Beadbreaker and a spare carcass
OR
Buy a sixth GOE rim and tyre.
Both around the same price.
The illegal alternatives are;
Grind the calipers so the LR 18 would fit(not sure how much needs to come off)
OR
Replace the larger calipers with the 2.7L calipers
There is one more choice, get a carcass, don't worry about the tyre changer and hope there's a tyre fitter nearby.

No need to grind anything on a MY12 D4 with 3.0 diesel fitting a RRC500242 8Jx18 D3 rim. Here are some photos. I haven't checked the clearance with plasticine but it would be in the 4-5mm range
You may have missed the point, this is a second spare to get you out of trouble not when traveling along the Bruce Highway but the CSR or Gibb. When you get to the next town with a tyre changer just swap them over if they can't fix or replace the damaged tyres. I doubt the police in the troupie would really care that there is 9mm difference in offset. They are more likely to ask me why I need so many firearms!
You could always paint it yellow, write 80kmp max. and call it a temporary spare! It would have less impact on vehicle dynamics than a 175/80/19 which is a "LEGAL" option. How logical is that!

I know exactly what it's for, hence the word "hope"(ie)roadhouse
Getting the best option is probably better, you may need to travel quite a long way in remote areas with that emergency spare, 18" tyres are pretty hard to get outside metro areas, even country towns like Tumut, Tumbarumba, Corryong, Mansfield, Bairnsdale are hard to get 18" tyres from to fit a D3/D4, I was lucky and found one at Sale, and one in Myrtleford, he had to drive to Wadonga to get it for us though, very nice of him I thought, that was after 3 days of searching and we were only in Dargo.
Anyway, you have said that the 18" rim from the D3 will fit a 3.0L D4, I have a thread going tiltled compatable parts, can you put that info in the thread, I will be making it a sticky thread so all the info is readily available to D3/D4/RRS owners to view for this exact reason, would be great if you could.

Thanks rufusking, exactly what the second spare is for, the get you out of the poo quickly instead of frying in the sand fighting tyre irons, I have done that on big beemers and it gets boring fast.

Will a 17" rim fit on the rear of a 3.0 D4?

Afraid not, 18" is the smallest using standard LR rims.

Thanks for the link!
They seem to indicate they're only modifying the front brakes to fit their 17" rims. Are their 17" rims at a special offset?
I'm now assuming that a 3.0 D4 also has larger rear brakes than the 2.7 D4 which restricts fitting a standard 17" rim.

Yes, larger rear brakes as well and 17" don't quite fit.
My 3.0 D4 currently has 17" BMW X5 rims fitted with the brake conversion done well before those in the above link did the same conversion.

If I remember rightly several members who go off road on a regular basis have fitted D3 brakes to their D4's so they can use 17" rims. Apparently it's pretty easy to swap the brakes over and not expensive as there are plenty of wrecked D3's around.
Is it legal? ... I don't believe so.

How many years ago was that Barry? 3 or maybe 4 from memory?
While it might not have changed for the better and it could still be hard to find 18's in regional areas unless one phoned around now who would know if stocks are better or not. Things may have improved given how long ago that was and how many new 4x4's have been sold in the interim with 18" rims standard. Like all things it comes down to demand whether a size is stocked or not.

I had a situation just over a month ago trying to get an 18" tyre in Bamaga. There was nothing north of Cairns.
Considering Bridgestone D697's are about $400 in 265/60R18 and only about $250 in 265/65R17 I would think there's still a compelling argument for considering 17" wheels for both price and tyre replacement availability for those with a D3 or 2.7 D4.

Hi Drizzle, the 18" AT3's on the D3 are just about worn out now. That is the path I reckon I will be going down of fitting 265/65 D697's on one of the spare sets of 17's as the every day tyres, easy economics if one has spare rims, not always so if one has to buy rims to try and save money on tyres though I reckon.

There's always the option of X5 17" rims @$50/rim on eBay. Still way in front [emoji6]

I believe I've got my head around sourcing a factory 18" rim to use as a second emergency spare only for use on the rear of my 2014 D4 (I've got 5x compomotives on the way), but have only found reference to the D3 18" wheels. Would a D2 HSE 18" wheel be suitable also?
Graeme

18" D3 are fine as exactly the same brakes were fitted to the V8 D3 but D2 don't clear the centering spigot for starters.

D4 18" wheels fit on the rear of MY14 onwards.
