should I spread or pencil?

I'm getting closer to buying some lights. I was wondering whether anyone has any thoughts on whether I should get two pencils, or one pencil and a spread beam?

OK back in the good old days when i rallied (last year)
I ran 4 driving lights.
2 forward were spot and spread.
2 to the side were flood.

Great combo.

I've just installed Lightforce.

The basic light can be focussed like some torches so that you can make them spread or pencil.

Further more you can buy clip on diffusers that will give a wider spread or combination.

I have done some tracks at night where on a steep down hill you also need to illuminate up to see what lies ahead once you reach the bottom.

The spread diffuser on one light can be turned 90 degrees to illuminate vertically and together with the horizontal spread from the other diffuser should give all round lighting.

Well that is the theory.

I like the adjustability to suit the conditions.

If you're thinking about 'bull lights', I've got both spot/pencil beams on mine and work well for what I'm used to, heaps of light way up the road.
Not sure if you can get diffusers similar to the lightforce system, spots with diffusers would be a good idea.

Craig (Mr Spotlights) in Brisbane, sells stuff on Ebay as well, would sell you a pair for $149 which is much cheaper than $180 each from an auto shop or sparky. So you could buy four lights off Craig for the cost of two from the local and run four lights for those late night rally jaunts. style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif

I have Cibie Super Oscars, 1 driving, 1 pencil. The close up stuff is reasonably well taken care of by the standard Defender headlights once you re-wire them. :wink:

The Cibies are far from new but suit me OK. If I were buying them new, then it'd be either Lightforce or Lightforce, no other choice for me.
