Can anyone assist with clues to these problems?
1. My heater is not putting out heat, engine runs normal operating temp.
2. The cruise control is spasmodic, vacuum tube seems OK.
TIA

How long have you had the car? Was this all working before?
The reason I ask is that when the heater matrix bursts, it's common to just bypass it as it's a C*&t of a job to do. If not, blead the system to make sure you haven't got any air locks in as that could cause problems.
The cruise control could be having problems with the cutout switch on the brake peddle. The vacuum hose leads down to this switch and cuts the vacuum as soon as it is depressed... It also has a tendancy to cut the vacuum if it's having problems!
If you're happy that there are no problems with the switch or leaks (sucking on the hose to see if you can control the throttle position will test this) then your problems are going to either be the steering casette or the vacuum pump itself.

Thanks Mark,
Have had the car since Monday, just starting to explore it and fix up things that I didn't know about.

can you see if the heater hoses are actually connected to the heater?

I'll check all that out on Sunday, I guess it will be either bypassed or the matrix is blocked, unless there has been a valve fitted to close the system off during summer

Is your car a "soft dash' or the old hard dash. A 94 should be soft dash.
If it is a soft dash I think the system is completely different to the earlier one. It sounds like a vacuum motor may have gone and caused a vacuum leak which may affect the cruise as well.
I read once that the soft dash is actually a Honda design , from a Legend which was also used in the Rover car and then the Range Rover and Disco.

Thanks Phillip, you are always a good source of information.
Yes it is a soft dash, I looked at the CC system last night and formed that opinion also as the diaphragm appears to be OK. Following the Vac hose it appears the vac pump is under where the second battery would go, is this correct?

I have no idea, but now that you mention it I seem to recall that the Rangie cruise control has its own vacuum pump.
Have you done the tongue test on the vacuum lines? Ie sucked on the pipe and stuck it to your tongue, to see how long it sticks?

Yes... The vac pump is under the shelf for the optional second battery (which is where the air intake is).
Make sure you do the tongue test first though.....

I'll try the test on Sunday, but, pardon my ignorance in these tongue test matters, I assume I test the line that goes to the diaphragm, the line that goes to the brake pedal switch and the one that goes to the vacuum.
How long does it have to hold? My tongue won't go out of shape??
I can test the Vacuum switch by attaching an independant 12V I would think.
Does the vacuum pump operate on signal from the CC switch and stays on whilst CC is operating?
Thanks for your help

You will know within seconds. It will either fall off within a second or so or stay on. You only need say 10 seconds.
I think your tongue will survive.

Your best place to test the system is to disconnect the hose from the vac pump, suck on it and see if it'll stick to your tongue for more than a few seconds....
If it holds, then you've either got an electrical or pump problem.
If it doesn't then you just need to replace the vac hose.

OK, can hold vacuum in hose to diaphragm, hose to brake pedal switch but not to vacuum pump.
Does this mean pump is not operating properly? and is it serviceable?
