Ok, after finally stopping the brakes pulling left because of oil on the pads on the front left wheel (replaced the oil seal) it is now heavily pulling to the left.

It only started last night, and this morning when I pulled up on some gravel at my parents place, the LH Front wheel locked up very easily. Now i've adjusted and bled all of the brakes recently, and re greased the front bearings (and replaced one as some of you know  ), so what could be causing this????

Have I messed up bleeding the brakes, I did have some trouble bleeding that wheel, is that my problem? (I had trouble loosening the nut, I think I bled it anyway 8O )

Is the brake pad adjustment mechanism too tight on the locking wheel - or alternatively too loose on the other wheels?

They are all pretty even, and the wheel isn't heating up, so no dragging brake. Locking the wheel so easily is a worry, I hope it stays dry for the moment, it could be interesting on a wet greasy road 8O

Double check your wheel cylinders.

I'm doing a series 3 tomorrow, it had the brakes done 5 years back with all new cylinders, when I pulled it a part yesterday the 2 of the front cyl were siezed 2 were leaking as were bothe rears. The owner paid $1500 for the last rebuild.

Believe it or not, but the next day I drove it, it did it for the first 1/2 of the trip, tehn stopped (ie was normal) and has been fine since. All I can think of is that it siesed and is now free again style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif

In my experience something automotive that seizes then frees itself is not good, more likely it was just a little residual oil on the drum.

could have been, there was a lot of oil and muck in there from the leaking seal. it's coming apart again soon to put an overhaul kit through the avm hubs, so I can check things out then.

For those watching, I took the drum off to have a look on the weekend while I put an overhaul kit through my AVM hobs, and guess what I found

Leftover from my wheel bearing failure incident (the wheel fell off) I found a roller bearing floating around the drum, probably wasn't doing it much good

G'day Phoenix style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif
You have an Overhaul kit for AVM hubs :?: where did you get it from ? and does it contain the springs? what is in the Kit :?:

I got the kit from my local ARB store, but it doesn't contain a lot.

It contains:

New set of bolts (mine had rounded heads, and were a PITA)
New castle nut (well for mine anyway, 10 spline is different I think)
New split pin
New felt seal
new rubber ring
2 new gaskets.

Really, it doesn't replace a lot, but it replaced a lot of the damaged bits in mine. Cost was about $50 from memory, but the don't sell a lot because people tend to buy new hubs (what a waste  ). Initially they gave me a 10 spline one and abused me when they had to get a replacement in, but I got what I wanted in the end.

G'day Phoenix style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif
Not a lot of help then, can get the felts for the 10 spline @$1 each, split pins I buy by the Packet, the gaskets I make from Gasket paper from REPCO 1/64th so I only miss out on the "O"ring style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif
Most Series vehicles axles/hubs use BSF/Whitworth bolts/threads, the hub studs are 3/8BSF-5/16Whit heads You can usually buy these in ring or sockets at Sunday Markets CHEAP style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif Whit/BSF are also used in G/box and Transfer style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif so a good variety of those tools never goes astray style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif by the way the axle end nut is 1" SAE same as all of the drive flange nuts,G/box ,Diffs, (the big ones behind the unis)

are the brakes still working fine?

did you change the brake shoes?
as oil or brake fluid on the linings will cause them to bind to the drum.

I never changed the brakes as the amount of oil on the pads was negligible. Only say a drip of oil a day leaked out, and as it is my daily driver, that was worn off quickly. Mainly it was on the components of the brakes.

I've not lost any braking capacity either, although it is nice to be able to brake straight rather than with a hige pull to one side!

G,day
Just a tip from me to save you big woes in the future regarding your hubs.
With the little Allen keyed bolts on the hubs, you will find them hard to get off and risk striping out the heads of 'em if you dont put a smear of greese on the stems (the wine glass shaped bit) This puts a microscopic film between them and the hubs and they will stay tight till you want them to undo  .
How have you guys been btw?.

We are heading to hobart for a weekend in the next month or so, might see if we can drop by and say g'day
