Funny how you think of odd things in a 4wd forum.

4x4 or fourby was the cleaning cloth issued to you each week by the CQ to clean your rifle.

also issued was a bottle of oil .

as I was a gunner I got extra supplies of everything, often a roll of fourby, which I would often doll out to the rest of the diggers in the section.

we would religiously draw our weapons , strip and clean , oil and reassemble , have them inspected by nco's before handing them back in.

as I was a gunner I had to clean my gun and my rifle but I didn't mind.

who remembers the pullthrough and the cleaning roll which went everywhere you went?

I still have a pullthrough and a set of cleaning rods.

I remember using the horrible insect repellent to clean the carbon from some of those hard to get places on the M60 and getting in the shower with it after a big shoot.

So 4x4 doesnt pertain to 4wd's only.

Does anyone know if they still use it?

I always thought it was 4x2. The pre cut cloth for the smaller calibre is still called fourby, even though it is about 1 1/2" x 1 1/2".

here's some nostalgia to any ex-gunners out there.

check out the piles of link and brass as it fires.

this puts a big grin on my face , having used this gun at sustained fire rates.

still have a roll from my Ptl 2IC days. Oh and a L1A1 cleaning kit. Use it regularly for detail cleaning jobs on small parts.
Thanks for the vid, gives the term SFMG a whole new slant!

When you said gunners, I thought you meant Gunners.

The best cleaning kit is the one for the Mag 58 which replaced the M 60. It has a tool for everything. Nt many people actually know how to use it properly.

The Chinooks flying in Afghanistan had a Dillon each side and a Mag 58 on the ramp and a AH64 Apache escort with 30mm Cannon and hellfire.

Looks simliar to the Remote Weapon System (RWS) as fitted to Bushmasters and ASLASV. I think the M113 may have it as part of the upgrade as well.

Maybe it was an in house thing, it is a hill at puckapunyal . If we did not meet The standard it was a run up the hill. It was called tit hill as it was a moderate rise with a rock on the top. Only did it once. We were 2nd commando company reserves. A long time ago.
