Hi all,
I have just installed my Nugget Stuff breather kit and while under the car noticed this.

Is this normal? It looks like there should be a bolt and spacer there.
Cheers

Thanks Guys,
That' a relief, however the threaded lug on the gearbox perfectly aligned with the hole in the crossmember bracket deceivingly looks like it should serve some purpose.

It's a carry over from military vehicles, series models had a horizontal shaft that was bushed at each end from the cross member to the gearbox, the 110 models had it like that.I have no idea what it does nor have I been able to get a definitive answer as to it doing what it actually did, what ever that was. Series Landrovers had an optional restraint bar between the crossmember and the gearbox to ensure the fan did not hit the radiator in minor accidents or if an engine mount fails, especially when fitted with a military fan. It seems this may be provision for a fitting to achieve the same effect.

I wonder if the cross member is for when you remove the transfer case the gearbox can rest on the cross member? If that is the case it sure would be handy.
Mine is the same MY13.
I can't 100% recall if the Army 110's have the same cross member supporting the 4 speed box?

No it is not normal - it is way too clean, and I cannot see any leaks!

As already mentioned it may have been there to support the gearbox when changing out the rear mounts or when removing just the transfer case. I havent used it for that yet as every Defender puma that needed the centre diff looked at also needed a clutch.
Although Land Rover specifically designing that support for the above use is harder to believe than thinking it was designed on the computer to be the rear gearbox mount without the thought that the land rover transfer case has its own mounts. Hence the centre mount became redundant.

Give it time, it only has 2000km on it.

Computer? Defender? A Sinclair maybe. I sort of envisage a bunch of blokes with a pint playing darts & doing the design on a wet bar top :D
