View Full Version : Where have you fitted your additional power sockets?
Jeff

I am looking to fit additional 12v power sockets in my new Puma. One will go near the rear speaker for the Engel, one near the shelf under the glovebox. I would like one for the rear passengers to use, but not sure where, perhaps up high near the the handle.

My old Tdi CC isn't too different to yours.
I have two Hella sockets to fit and one will be going in the dash, as will a USB socket, and I really think I need one in the rear passenger area too for when the fridge is on the back seat and not in the tray.
Already have one in the tray.

Anderson plug for fridge, 2 x cig sockets for lights and extras, fused at single fuse block.

Usb sockets and cig socket at front of ex box, fused at single fuse box. Will run additional sockets to rear of ex box as required when kids are older.

Here's what I did...

Back Seat Power. This is a unit I bought from Jaycar. It is held on with double sided tape and got used extensively when the kids used to come with us. I will probably remove it soon as it prevents the rear seat from folding forward. Since it was installed with double sided tape there will be no evidence left once removed:

Front passenger power:

I have an after market glovebox and there's a charging cable in there as well.

I was thinking of that, but I intend to install drawers, so not sure if they will block it, so might have to be higher.
I have the glovebox too, so might put one in there too. Can't have too many as I found out with the old one.
Got the new one dirty for the first time yesterday :)

:rocket:As you alluded to, there's room to put it above the speaker. Glad to hear it got dirty! FWIW, every cent I've spent on panel protection has paid off. Based on what happened to your 300TDi last time we went for a drive a set of bumparettes may be a good investment for you

Hi Jeff,
I have two 12v sockets in the roof console, handy for charging iPad/ torches and so on. These get used all the time because it's easy to put whatever's charging, up and out of the way.
In the rear, I have a 12v socket and a USB charger on the passenger side just aft of the gullwing. These get used less but they're very handy for running an LED camping light off, for example.
I have an Anderson plug outside the car under the rear bar which I use to plug in the compressor.
The last power-related mod I did was to install a solar panel on the roof and a Goal Zero Yeti 400 battery which has 2 x 12v sockets and 2 x 240v plug outlets which are probably unnecessary but useful for charging a laptop or something.

I have drawers in and I put a double at the rear on the top of the side panel for the drawers but under the window so I can still load crates etc without them getting in the way. I put a single at the front of the cargo area on top of the same side panel which can be accessed for the rear seats although at the moment I plug the fridge into it. I put a fuse box in which I also run the rear worklight through.
I had a National Luna battery monitor I bought for my old camper trailer which I never used so I plugged that in through the fuse box as well. I have that stuck on with double sided tape to the rear panel but it keeps falling off so need to sort something else out for that.

I've got draws and fitted 1 merit plug on each side into the speaker trim.
They are under the window trim so out of harms way for any big items on top of the drawers.
Fridge cables then run up the sides and no plugs are hanging out to bump accidently.
Additionally....
-1 merit plug under the LHR seat bracket with higher rated cable so it can be used for an 240v invertor.
-1 merit plug external between the number plate and the number plate light(for the awning light)
-Switch mounted into the number plate light extension housing for a rear mounted LED light
-Dash mounted USB above the grab handle instead of below as per the other posts.

Twin USBS and cigarette sockets velcroed to the lower dash in front of the gear levers.
Twin USBs and single cigarette velcroed to side of cubby for rear seat passengers.
Twin USBs screwed to dash in front of passenger and behind grab handle for the reversing camera and my iPod
Single cigarette near the rear door above the trim on the passenger's side.
I'm also planning to fit a rear battery in the rear drawers and have a panel of switches connected to it.

Does the panel above the speaker panel come off easy, or does the side window one have to come off first?

The panel above the speaker panel does come off. The two little round studs you see on the photo has a clip on the inside which clips the plastic panel to the main body. There is also one up higher above that you can not see in the photo.
You don't need to remove the side window panel. I found the clips didn't hold once removed and ended up buying new ones.

Isn't it always a case that the panel you want to take off first is the last that can come off?? :)

As per Aguy's post, that panel does come off and it comes off without removing any other panel first. The part number for the clip is BTR6682 and it is always handy to have them on hand as they often break when the panel is removed and as Aguy noted, even if you do get them off unharmed they will probably break next time.
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2015/05/185.jpg
To remove the panel, pull the door edge of the panel towards the front of the vehicle, focusing effort on the locations of the two clips. giving the clip location a thump towards the side of the car with the heel of your hand can sometimes help the clip release. Once the clips have released (or broken) the panel will then slide out towards the door.
Personally though, I would put the sockets along the top of the speaker panel instead. The trim fasteners for that panel are part number EYQ100130 as they often do not survive the centre being unscrewed more than once or twice, especially the one on the door edge.

I've already stripped two of those phillips head screws. Softer than a very soft thing.

I stripped a few threads so I use the trim panel remover tools to pop them off.

Thanks to this thread (and others) I have fitted my aux outlets in the panel above the speakers (1 x twin usb, 1 x Engel plug, 1 x 12v and 1 x meter). I have got the replacement clips (BTR6682) but am struggling to fit them to the panel. Is there a trick or is brute force required?

This is what I came up with. It has:
- 30amp auto resetting circuit breaker
- 2 x Hella sockets (individually switched)
- 1 x Engel screw in socket for fridge
- digital meter (amps left in battery, amps current draw, voltage, etc)
Plus you can turn the digital display on or off as you please.
cheers,
Wayne

Wayne,
I like your setup. Can you tell me where you got all those parts to do that job?

I put the trim clip in place on the window trim. There is a metal piece that holds it. I then put the tip of a flat screw driver into the clip and pushed the trim and screw driver together. Once the trim clip slots into place you can then push the trim on to the window surround and it will stay inplace.
Not very high tech but it was the only way I could get the clip to lock on to the holder.
