Ha ha very funny you lot! I've been fortunate enough to have received a 1996 hse in restorable rebirthable condition and will try my hand at a diesel conversion. Vehicle was essentially free and still needs work as the trans has lost all forward gears the heater is leaking and all the usual suspects are wrong with hevac etc. Still it has decent cream leather and apart from the headliner is quite ok. The trouble and strife has basically intomated that further touring will not be undertaken in any form of defender or suchlike so i have been charged with a sacred quest to make a fantastically capable yet stupidly complicated vehicle into a simpler and economical towing/ touring vehicle. Thats as far as we have got but the vehicle is here and at some point the project will begin☺

Any thoughts at this point as to which oil burner ?
Or will you make it reasonably simple (P38a, simple ?) and use the TD6 ?

Likely to be a td5 as i have one here complete rebuildable. The bellhousing from the 4hp22 will bolt to the 4hp24 so keeping it all rover will be a sensible and neat option. I am under no illusion about the difficulty of the task but willing to give it a go as the purchase of a lc100 turbo which was on the short list would be the beginning of the slide into mediocrity. .. despite that glorious FTE engine. Aww, c'mon Pedro.
A VNT, mild remap and decent IC and it'd have more torque than a 4.6. :D

If it was good enough for the Queen... Then it should definitely be good for you too JC!
Enjoy the P38 Rangie experience and forget the nonsense from the jealous old luddites. In saying that, you will get challenged here and there. Plenty of info and experts around here to steer you through the minefield of non-truths and exaggerations though. It should only be an uneasy time until you get on top of the PO's outstanding maintenance and put the vehicle onto a preventative maintenance program.
Don't know if I would bother with the diesel idea to be honest. Properly set up LPG will increase your range and reduce the running costs without harming the vehicle. The write ups I have read about the factory diesels are that they were slug's.

'Tourer' and '4.6L on LPG' don't go in the same sentence.
Besides.
JC has his head screwed on just right, and therefore knows how to make a Td5 anything but a slug ;)
So come on JC.
Get that Td5 in, get it mapped and a nice big IC, throw a VNT on it and get some earmuffs because the V8 fanboys will be shrieking long and loud ;) :D :burnrubber:

Puhhhlease, the P38a is that ugly, non-performing middle child that makes its parents regret that holiday to the Greek Islands each time a school report comes back.
It was the car that should have been, between two cars that were.
But still, I want to see what kind of an animal JC can turn it into. :D

Wow, I'm sure it will be a very nice, comfortable, capable vehicle in the end. A definite positive from a project like this is you will know it inside out.
I'm a bit over mods and knock on dramas. I'd consider rebuilding the v8. While EAS is brilliant, one mod I would consider for a P38, from reading stuff here, is coils.
Good luck JC.

The v8 makes a perfect tourer on lpg. Weighing 3 tonne we averaged 13.7l/100k up to qld and back. With the lpg we filled up at Goondawindi, and the next fillup was in Echuca.
Have you thought about putting a 1hdfte in it.....

But not in NSW. I've just done a couple of thousand km down the Echuca and back. The highest price was just north of the Murray where it was 99.9c/litre. Just over the river in Vic it was 59.9.
I didn't fuel up at 99.9, it was cheaper to run on petrol.

I'll second that, provided LPG is available and cheap enough.
Mine is a High Compression Thor HSE with injected LPG (gas not liquid) and I've found it hard inland and in remote areas to get gas. No shortage of petrol though!
Personally I'd rather a long range petrol tank.

Keep your knickers on! A bit of jest and poking fun is half the reason many of us hang out on AULRO. I don't think any of the comments in this thread (other than one which I believe is in total jest) are nasty or cast nasturtiums (as my mother would say) about your precious p38's. Plenty of people hang **** on my clunky old oil burner but I couldn't give a dam. Meh is an interjection used as an expression of indifference or boredom. It may also mean "be it as it may". It is often regarded as a verbal shrug of the shoulders. The use of the term "meh" shows that the speaker is apathetic, uninterested, or indifferent to the question or subject at hand. It is occasionally used as an adjective, meaning something is mediocre or unremarkable.
