View Full Version : Traction Control?

Hi all,
During my trip last weekend I had a few people comment on my traction control in particular on the front end.
To tell you the truth I'm not sure if its working correctly or not!
Watch thi video and you will see it working in the beginning but not when forward progress was lost.

http://youtu.be/RkF1YWNkvcg

The vehicle is in Rock Crawl mode, DSC on and I have a rear eDiff.

Comments please?

Cheers Rich

It's all in the revs I think Rich, lower revs more forward movement, also using a higher gear, reduces the revs even though you're giving more throttle, which increases the TCs sensitivity, well that's the theory:angel:

I reckon if you had backed off slightly, you may have kept going, eventually the TC and eDiff would have kicked in.

I agree with Redback.

The natural tendancy for most people when traction is lost is to give it more right foot.
However, although not experienced with D3/D4's, I have found with TC on Defenders & D2's that often less revs equals more forward progress.

DSC- Doh- wish it could be really turned off then you could give it some curry.

That looked like fun. Agree with comments that backing it down a little in revs and up a gear may have helped.

Did you get up? Love to put mine beside to see how much difference your e-dif made.

That side was wet and slippery, next attempt was the other side which I drove up. The real challenge was this:

That's where I broke my rear axle Rich, too many revs and I slide backwards and sudden grip, bang goes the axle:(

Funny thing is, I should have listened to Kerry:dbcry:

Ah, MT Airlie just after the "canyon" .
I remember it well.
It looks worse now as the dirt approach has eroded, although it always was a wombat hole type situation where you had to go wide or end up with diagonalled wheels.
Did you drop your tyre pressures?

Yes, 20 rear 18 front. But I really should of been at 18/15!!!

Plenty of places to break a CV Baz, every vehicle had a min of 1 diff lock, lift and protection bars.

Drove straight through there including the wombat holes.

It all looks like it was working as per normal, The inside wheel was also slipping so transferring the drive would not have happened as instantaneous as you would of thought/liked.
Can i ask what gear you were in? As i assume the vehicle stalled??
Backing off then re-applying throttle gently but firmly would of worked;)

Cheers

1st Gear Low Range,
Yes the car did stall.

Having done Gordons course, the trick is NOT to use full throttle(DSC off),full throttle invokes the DSC despite it being turned off.
The only real off-road trip Ive done in my D4 really surprised me how well the electronics work,no need for the olde fashioned bootfull;););););)

Yep DSC robbed me of power, so yes I'm thinking I should of had DSC off as I normally do. I was remembering Baz mentioning he leaves it on except for sand so that's why I tried it.
Mind you after I switched off DSC I still had a couple of occasions that it cut in stopping me in my tracks.
Thats why I'm not happy with Traction Control in this extreme type of terrain.
2 ARB Airlockers would of been better I'm sure.

I would definitely have DSC off Rich. Another thing to remember is that with each new iteration of the vehicle, the traction control has been improved. A 2015 D4 will work out what it has to do in situations like that far more effectively. Easy to forget that your yours is 10 years old - just goes to show how good they are!

PS. What does old mate who "does not like traction control" drive?;)

Yes, wrong throttle Input :)

And have a think about it. If the vehicle didn't prevent "extreme wheel spin" the torque they make nowadays is likely to break something :)

In this case mate - too much welly, pressures too high and possibly a slightly off line.

Easy enough to do :)

Toyota 105 Series Live axle.
Double diff locked.

( He regrets opening his big mouth on traction control! )

I think this is a fantastic thread, so thanks for starting it Rich. It's been an excellent learning experience. I haven't had an opportunity yet to drive this sort of terrain and won't get to that often, so picking up tips from behind the computer screen is great.

Hopefully this will inspire others with video. Pictures are worth a thousand words but the feedback has been spot on. Hopefully I'll get to post something like that one day for constructive criticism.:D

Cheers,
Scott

Thanks everyone and thanks Scott,

Ok this is the other side of that rock face in first video.
Note tyres are LT and 10ply and at 18/20PSI.
Looking at the grip level I now wish I'd dropped to 15/17PSI.
While these are Mud Terrain tyres which work brilliantly in mud I'm thinking the compound is not suited to slippery rock unfortunately.
Where I stopped I switched off DSC and got up.
Traction control looks to be working correctly.

As others have said, back off and let the TC work. Looks fun.

It's interesting about turning the DSC off, I've never done this, and didn't do it when we did Mt Airley, you looked to have done that fairly easily Rich, something I'll keep in mind.

I've gone from a D1 with a rear auto locker to a Defender with TC and its been a learning curve for me. Out at Emu Creek 4WD Park near Tabulum earlier this month I found I had to deliberately ease off when a wheel spun and let the TC work. A light foot was the go. I would stop, ease off, the TC would cause a wheel to grip and it would ease forward.
Frankly, the TC worked much better than I had expected.
Can't comment on later Discoverys though.
