HI

I finally fitted this combo last weekend and the results so far are very positive though I have only done 30K and have yet to give it a blat up the M1 :p

When it's idling it sounds like a different car , much smoother. It drives more smoothly as well. I out that down to the Gen III injectors, the ones in it were original by the look of the state of them

Mine had Callaway style very shprt intake trumpets on it, see pic for comparison with SuperFlow. This seemed to give better acceleration (i.e. more horses) but at the expense of torque, so I went for the SuperFlow carbon fibre ones. They taper from 48 to 38 mm and are a bit shorter than the original LR ones. ACT claim +10HP and more torque across the range.

There is definitely more torque, much less gear changing going up Kariong hill :D

So a worthwhile investment so far

And very sexy looking too! Does the cover still fit?

As per the instructions we had to 'Fettle' the trumpets a little to get the plenum cover to fit.

One thing they left out was that a little bearing blue would have been handy to see where the fettling was required, in the end we used a paint pen on the edge of the trumpets to find the high points.

So now the car is in "Fine Fettle" :wasntme:

I meant to add it also came with a thermal gasket for the trumpet base.

It certainly keeps the plenum cooler, but the general opinion on the TVR and Morgan forums is that it doesn't make much difference to the engine

Just a quick update; Having finally driven on the M1 I can say it has definitely changed the torque curve, much less gearchanging, it feels close to the Thor torque curve now.

It is also smoother and might have a little more power

All in all I am pretty happy with my investment:p

Steve,

On your second image, have the trumpets fallen through or are they really that short, i.e., much, much shorter than a standard GEMS?

If the Callaway trumpets are that short, would the new ones offer much over stock trumpets? Edit: I just found their website where they claim 10hp.

Dunno which ones I'd use as my P38A heads have been ported and I run a different cam.

Re the insulator, have you seen the group buy thread for thicker insulators? http://www.aulro.com/afvb/group-buy/221065-rover-v8-intake-thermal-insulators.html I'm unconvinced as to the value of them despite the linked article.

I can't seem to find the image of callaway trumpets that I've seen, but I don't remember them being that short.

It seems a worthwhile thing to do, especially if it brings the torque curve down a bit.

Where abouts did you get the gen3 injectors from?

Re the video below, have you noticed any improvement in starting? Sometimes mine really takes some cranking if it doesn't catch first time.

I've just read this thread, too. http://www.rangerovers.net/forum/7-range-rover-mark-ii-p38/41722-bosch-gen-iii-injector-upgrade.html

Interesting. It might have been more economical to do this than have my injectors serviced.

Ron

Yes according to Rupert they were cut down by the guys at TRS when they rebuilt the engine, they told him it was supposed to give better acceleration. I suspect they give more horsepower at the expense of torque. The Callaway trumpets are the closest thing I could see. Mine will be going on ebay soon :p

From what I have read the rover V8 is sensitve to intake flow, Mark Adams of Tornado fame gave me the tip about these trumpets and the guys on the TVR and Morgan forums reckon they really do make a difference.

I imagine the taper gives a bit of a Ram effect and increases the density of the air in the manifold.

Opinion on the insulator (again TVR and Morgan guys) is that it makes stuff all difference but it came with the trumpets so I put it on anyway.

Yes they are not actual Callaway ones, see my reply to Ron

And I can't find that inlet manifold site with all the manifolds again either :(

I got the Gen III Injectors in the States, these are GEMS ones of course

Mine starts first time 99 out of 100 goes I never have to give it a good crank.

Yes I read that thread before I decided to get the injectors. They definitely make it run more smoothly

I found the Rover V8 inlet manifold archive ;)

Rover V8 inlet manifold photo archive (http://www.mez.co.uk/ms12-new.html)

I note this comment on the Thor manifold v Gems

"the throttle body has a 68 mm throttle as standard and again, we often take this out, in this case to 71.5 mm. The Thor manifold, when used with either a standard cam or a mildly tuned cam, gives a strong torque peak at around 2,000 rpm, much higher than that achievable with the Lucas plenum design, but even with careful gas-flow work the power is limited. We find it difficult to achieve more than around 280 bhp with this manifold, where a similar amount of effort on a Lucas Plenum manifold will yield 320 bhp (but with less torque below 3,500 rpm) "
