The problem with these plates is that they are screwed on, so they can easily move between vehicles. The chassis number (VIN did not exist in Series 1 time) is also stamped on the chassis, and this will be on the left rear back spring hanger if it is Australian built. Expect to need to wire brush it to remove paint and rust to even see the number, let alone read it.
Up until 1955, the first digit was the last digit of the year.
After that, the first four digits specified the year, wheelbase, type etc, with the fourth digit usually, but not always being the year digit. But all of these had 1 as the first digit except 1956 107s where it was 8 for the station wagon and 2 for others. Where the first digit is 1, the second digit is always 1 or 2 except for 107 wagon where it is always 3.

Hope this helps,

Thanks John. He was asking the question on my behalf (without being asked to - thanks mate :BigThumb:)
I'll be looking at the vehicle tomorrow. If I'm silly enough to buy it, I'll go looking for the stamped number.
Cheers

Crackers,
The one thing you will have to be careful about is that it is often cheaper to get a whole vehicle than a motor or some other component you need. Before you know it three vehicles in various states will be in your yard.
