Hi,
Just before I did a trip up to caloundra from Canberra I got an oil change.
I was towing a small van, not sure of overall wright but reckon less than 2000kg and probably did 4000+ km.
We went via the highways and did not flog it.
My oil gauge dropped to just below 3/4. I have topped it up but just wondering what other people are experiencing.
I have done about 42,000km to date

Seems high.
Your level could have been low anyway. My last service, they under filled the engine, but still exceptable level.
I check my level weekly now. Just completed a 4000km trip to Cameron corner and back and oil level moved from full to just below full, one bar if you like.
Fully loaded D4 3205kg with high wind resistance on roof, and X20 camper at 1260kg, 4000km ave speed 82km/hr with 13.2lts/100km.
Regards

I thought I checked it after the service and it was full but may not have been level.
Also it varies if you check when completely cold compared to after driving.
I went to LR today to ask about it and they topped it up for me. When he first checked it I get the not available message. The guy pushed the cancel button a couple of times and. It showed the level. He said it dies not always work but may be away of avoiding to 10-15 wait after driving
I believe I got ok economy though. I know economy gauge is not accurate but it was showing 9-10.4 at the end of the trip which is not bad.

Give the engine a bit of a hiding when relatively new to get those piston rings nicely bedded to the bores.
Your engine will be the better for it..
And an Italian tune up every now and then won't go astray..

3/4 empty or full on the readout????
I got the dealer to top mine up,1/2 empty or full;);););) on the readout.Only took 250mls to fill it,and they were very carefull on how much they tipped in.That was 11000km from new.
Make sure you dont over fill. The gauge doesnt mean the sump is that much full or empty, how much did you add????
They have the electronic knowledge, its a shame it doesnt tell you how much oil it wants. Our 2005 Merc prime mover at work does;););););)

My MY14 is pretty accurate on the dash readout, from what others have posted there may be an improvement in the alogrithms used compared to earlier D4s????

The guys at lr did the topping up for me, they even gave me a bottle of oil to take away, good service.
Not sure how much he put in but he said it would tell me if over filled, bit late then.
I will check again this morning before driving the car.
The oil usage definitely goes up when towing.
I never had to top up on a previous car but then I had oil changes more frequently
The recommended 26,000km is to high. I will be getting mine done at the half way marks as well from now on, peace of mind if nothing else.

My MY11 D4 3.0L did not seem to use any oil up until approximately 85,000kms on the clock. From then on when it has an oil change and its is filled up with the black gold it seems to burn a little until the gauge or is it the 'oil level meter' sits one mark below full and there it will sit no matter the motoring until the next oil change! I initially thought it was the new filter taking up a bit of oil but even when I added the small amount of oil to bring it back to full the same thing happens i.e. it burns a bit of oil until it is at the first mark below full. From what I can see in the rear vision mirror there is no visible smoke etc. from the exhaust. Go figure:confused:
