Coolant refill help

G'day guys,

Today I went and bought some OAT red coolant concentrate. I took off the bottom radiator hose and put the garden hose into the expansion tank and flushed out the old water.... (previous owner only had water in there) Lots of orange/rusty water came out. So reconnected the bottom hose and mixed my coolant 50/50 mix. Went to add it via the expansion tank and could only get about 6 ltrs in before it overflowed. Top bleed screw was off too and only clear water was coming out, no coolant :( Ok so am I missing something?? I know the system can hold about 13 ltrs. How do i get the coolant in? Should I just pour the concentrate straight in and let it mix in the water already in there?

I have searched the forums and found a couple threads, however they were all different and don't make sence (to me lol). Help me please! :) 99 Defender Td5

Hi Scotty , do you know how much fluid you drained out ? Did you catch It in a bucket or bowl . The thing is It's hard to get all your fluid out . You can't drain you heater , plus It can sit in hoses , and in the block . The thing is you can't put more in than you took out , If you haven't run It , you can probably get a lt. in the heater . Jim

Before adding fresh coolant I'd use an acid based cleaner such as Tectaloy HD2 or Cummins/Fleetguard Restore Plus.

This will neutralise any corrosion present and not overwork the anti-corrosion package in the coolant.

Nah mate, no idea lol. I just ripped off the hose and let it drain away onto the grass.

I did mine last week,removed the thermostat plug and radiator plug and filled via the header tank.If you got scale and rust from the system it's knackered,you need to remove the rad and get it rodded,you are better off starting again with new hoses,thermostat rodded rad etc or it'll cost you $$$$ in repairs. Pat

if you're going to ddo an acidd flush do it with your old hoses and thermostat in place ...do it before you remove the radiator but after you do a back flush of the heater core and the raiator with fresh water.
