I have a new D90 on order and am looking at what I can to do from day one to prevent wear & tear, damage, corrosion etc. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure as they say.

I've ordered dealer fitted:
front mudflaps
front rubber mats
load space rubber mat
wing top protectors
waterproof seat covers
protection pack (paint, tint, interior etc)
electronic rust protection

I don't have a huge amount of faith in the electronic rust protection esp when concerned with land rovers aluminium/steel contact corrosion.

Would anyone know where in Perth I can take the vehicle to get additional rust proofing done, preferably where they knows Defenders and what areas are esp prone to rust? (and yes I've read the Defender2net link)

Also any other advice on what to do to a brand new vehicle to protect against potential wear & tear, damage, corrosion etc would be appreciated.

thanks Mark

Beam rustproofing is fantastic, my defender lives on the beach and they have looked after all me rust proofing. To date the only rust i have is on the external bolt heads.

Assuming the new 15MY Deefers still come with no underseal or liner on the rear wheelarches then one of the best things to do (for both the car and your sanity) is to put a rubber/plastic liner of some sort in there. There's a few threads on the subject.
But if the Beams place do a good enough underseal job you may not need it.

Yeah thought about rhino spraying the wheel arches after the rustproofing

Just been looking at Beams' website (the stuff they do seems pretty impressive I have to say!) and they offer a rhino lining on wheelarches and underbodies.

Cancel the electronic rust proofing and put that towards the rest. It's totally useless - as in the only thing it will prevent is you keeping that money!

Other than that - enjoy your new vehicle..

I don't have a huge amount of faith in electronic rust protection hence also looking additional spray protection but I can't see it being useless. Consumer law requires a product must be fit for its intended purpose, surely if it was useless people would've getting their money back or suing them. Either way I'm not relying on it entirely but just one of a couple of ways to protect a new car. I must admit I will be interested in the fine print in the electronic rustproofing documentation when it get done.

Maybe we are just lagging behind some other countries where electronic rust prevention cannot be sold because the manufacturers cannot demonstrate that it works.

Electronic rust prevention (http://corrosion-doctors.org/Car/car-electronic-rust.htm)

Countries like Canada and the U.S.A. have actually got court orders to stop these products from being sold - simply because they don't work.

Electronic rust proofing has been covered here before and has been proven many times that it doesn't work. It's a great idea in other applications but is sadly lacking in automotive use. The way these are set up, the only way it will be effective is if your vehicle was underwater. Not really a good option!

As an aside, my mechanic showed me a late model Land Cruiser they had in the workshop with the system fitted. What was interesting was that it had done a bit of beach work and had rust in quite a few places. Much of it was within 3 to 4cm of the anodes.

The law will eventually catch up with the sellers in Australia and it will be shown as not fit for purpose. My advice would be to put your money towards something more beneficial. Oh, and enjoy your new addition to the family! :D

Well where to go for spray on rustproofing in Perth seems to be sorted.

Any other suggestions on preventing wear or damage to a new car would be good.
Eg is rear panel damage common and rear corner protectors recommended, exterior stainless bolt replacement kits useful etc etc

Put it this way.. To fit the "pads" they will drill holes in the vehicle.. Introducing more points for rust to interact..

I've seen a vehicle (mums first RAV4 ) which was fitted with one. We removed it and found rust behind the pads!

You could say the same for any attachment/accessory that requiring drilling then - snorkel, wings top protectors, wing top and side vents, the list is useless. If done correctly in treating/painting any exposed metal it shouldn't be an issue

Can anyone provide an approximate cost of the Beams Rustproofing if they've had it done recently?

I used them last year. Rust proofing and also rhino liner in the rear wheel arches. Made a big difference to the stone noise and if I did it again I think I would use more rhino liner under the rear cargo area.

I will double check but I think I paid around $600.

I would use them again.

Except.... You're fitting accessories for a purpose...

Punching holes in the vehicle for absolutely no reason other than sticking a pad (behind which moisture builds up) which does absolutely nothing to protect the vehicle - that's just plain silly!!!

Paying that amount of money on something that absolutely doesn't work - when you could be putting it towards say - a steering protector, diff guard etc.. Or even a trip away... That's pure madness.

So just to clear up any confusion which 'pad' are you referring too?

If you mean checkerplate on rear corners then yes I agree I don't think they offer that much protection except from scratches perhaps. Is that what you were referring too?

I was thinking rear corner protection that you see attached to rear bumper steps that sits out from the rear corner panel.

The "capacitive coupler" pads... That claim to induce the excess electrons into the metal..

As for the lower check plate - it adds a level of stiffness to the thin alloy making minor bumps less likely to do damage..

The lower plate along the door sills prevents scuffs from people..

Rear corner bolt on bumperettes do a good job and act as a handy step if you have a rack, or bogged and want to get into the back door..

I did think about checkerplate along door sills wondering how scuffed they get with people getting in and out of the car.

Rear corner protection I was thinking of is the type in the photos. More to protect against tree stumps, rocks, bushes when finding yourself doing 3 point turns in narrow trails etc, or the occasional idiot parker.

If your going to put a rear wheel carrier on you need to consider this before putting rear bumperettes on.

Yeah from what I've seen some are compatible with a wheel carrier and some not

Yeah, I really liked the Frontrunner ones but they need modification to the drivers side one to fit with a Rijidij wheel carrier. I've got Mulgo ones in transit that fit.

I was having a look at the Beams website and came across their Chassis Filling and Sealing service.

Beam Rustproofing - Products and Services (http://www.beamrustproofing.com.au/Products/Rustproofing/Chassis-Foam-Filling.html)

Would this be overkill? Also would there be any down sides?

Only catch I can see would be if the loom in the rail would need to come out the chassis.

I asked about rust proof coatings at the dealer when I ordered my 110 last week and they said they only offer electronic rust prevention systems.

I couldn't believe it was being flogged by a Land Rover dealer.

As someone who's restored other cars, I thought everybody knew that electronic rust prevention is up there with magnetic wrist bracelets and healing crystals.

I know guys who swear by it, but it usually happens that they maintain their vehicles spotlessly in other ways too - which I suspect is why they have no rust.

I didn't even consider rust prevention until I read this forum.I don't intend doing too much beach driving and the one time I went to Stockton beach I washed underneath pretty well,I thought.Any way ,modern vehicles don't seem to suffer with rust like the old days.I thought the vehicles in the UK rusted because they salt the roads. Now that I've shown my ignorance on the subject,Has anyone used and can recommend someone in Sydney, west preferably

Can't help you there since I don't live in Sydney, but on the general topic of rust, I've gone to used 4x4 lots over the last few months and looked at modern Defenders from about 2008-2014 - and usually see rust appearing externally on the hinges, and internally in edges and nooks. I haven't got down under any but I can only assume the same is happening everywhere.

I'm also keen for a Sydney based option, but have never seen one recommended on these forums and Google is unsuccessful. Qld tick. WA tick. I even think there is a place in Melbourne. But no one in Sydney, so if anyone knows of one, please share!
