Cant get the video to upload :(, but today I had the pleasure of having a go at the Land Rover Experience site at the 4x4 Camping show at the Melbourne Show grounds.
Just so you can be aware, this group of people/cars, is a non-cost event, where ever they are at the major shows, so do yourself a favour, and grab a seat, well worth it. Their other affairs I expect would cost, as they do training and "tag a long" trips too. Waiting for some info on this from them, but sounds interesting.
Yeah yeah, I know, we're all perfect drivers, surely we could'nt possibly do with any training of any sort :wasntme:
But anyway, was onsite with Alan (Wardy1) and his partner, and as we were standing there just watching the Range Rover and Disco Sport doing their little things on the asigned track, we were aproached and asked if we wanted a ride,,,, well like yeahhh, does a bear **** in the woods?
WOW, the highlight of the ride was going straight up a 47deg slope, and down the other side of course. The RR just did it just so effortlessly, with all its power and electronic gadgetry, wow.
Also had a ride in the Disco Sport, (much to Leeannes' annoyance :p), and it was basically the same, just a walk in the park really.
Both vehicles have whats called Predictive Reverse, which actually shows on the screen the exact route you will take regarding where your wheels are turned to. So easy to pick a line when reversing.
The RR also had the cameras which show exactly where the front wheels are, and can show the rear wheels too, which makes picking a line through say a rocky outcrop an almost millimetre perfect run.
Other features include a feature that as you brake, the transmission is being told to downshift gears, so when you go to take off again, your already in the correct gear for instant power.
Just blown away by the features on these cars, just awesome. Just need to win Tatts now :(

I'm looking forward to going and meeting/spending some time with them and their little "hill" contraption if I can. I asked about how they thought the Puma would go up it.
He basically laughed and said it'd walk up in second very easily. Not having TC in mine or ABS for that matter, it'd be interesting.

Yours has anti-stall though doesn't it?
If so..low one, leave it to idle, it will climb that no problem.

Went to the show in Melbourne on Saturday. Mainly to look at camper trailers and a few other things of which there were plenty:D.
The best part though was a display with a 46 degree ramp and a few LR's in which you could hitch a ride:D:D
Off went Myself, partner and Chops into a new RR Sport. What an amazing piece of gear this thing is! Man, you don't even need to select the right gear in the auto, it does it for you. It also adjust the LSD the right amount to provide traction to a wheel in the air.... better than traditional TC I can tell you. Up we went. 46 degrees is bloody amazing. The driver stopped half way up to demo the hill start assist etc then just left it in drive, increased the revs and took off without a shudder...... then kept us in the right gear to go down the other side.... again 46 degrees. Bloody beautiful!
Next we all climbed aboard the brand spanking Disco Sport.
Same test..... just not a problem at all. It really is alot of car for the $62k I think. I have a mate with a BMW X3 and the Disco Sport absolutely kills it for equipment as well as ability.
I reckon LR have really found the formula again:D:D:D

Yeah it does Mark.
When we did the Border Track a couple of years ago, I just idled up one of the dunes so easily. It was a good little test so to speak of how it all works, but it was interesting how the guy said "2nd". I'd like to try, its quite a steep pitch going up that ramp :D .

Did they drive it through a flooded creek? Bob

Yeah.... they flooded the Maribyrnong River just for us.... absolutely amazing how well they did. The water was at least 6 metres deep and neither of them missed a beat. Just climbed out the other side, had a massive shake and got on with it.:wasntme:

Very sorry, but you just lost me with that. Don't think I would drive one where we normally go. Sounds like the Japs have won again. Bob

I also went for a quick lap today in a DS4 HSE at the land rover experience track, I couldn't believe how smooth it rode and it tractor'd up the 46 degree incline at 1300rpm and engine braked down it. Well impressed.

Oh for ****s sake Bob, it's time to move your mind forward and OPEN YOUR EYES!
This has nothing to do with "The Japs winning". In fact if you'll just take the bloody mask off your eyes, you'll see that "The Japs" have been copying LR very closely over the last few years..... Just have a look at the "Ground Breaking" things in the Prado and LC200 such has HDC, Hill Start Assist and Traction Control. You may not like any of these things, but they actually do work, and perhaps surprising to you, they seldom cause any problems in the bush.
I, like you, have been around this world for more than 5 minutes. Unlike you though, I look at what technology can GIVE me rather than what I think it might be taking.
Oh... I can still drive a manual too.... I simply choose not to. I also like aircon;)

HI chops , I also went the the show today , I went with my mate , Now he drove us there in his 100 series Cruiser . Now he can not resist any opportunity to tease me about Land Rovers , " but all in good fun " So I said come on lets have a go in the Disco , So we did . I can tell you he was really impressed , In saying that so was I . He started asking is this diesel , what size motor , nice leather seats , It's very quiet . When we got out and got a free bottle of Ginger beer . He said that was bloody steep , wasn't It !Do you know how hard that was for him to admit and he was impressed . He then said Land Rover have come a long way , since my old Series 2a . I can tell you , I had that Land Rover grin !!.. Jim :D:D

Well said, it's been well documented about D3s, D4s and even a couple of RRSs doing the OTT without an issue, I've driven through river crossings with water over the bonnet, driven up tracks much more difficult than the OTT many times without an issue and all dragging a camper trailer behind me, the OTT "THE HARD WAY" is a doddle compared to some of the tracks in the Vic High Country.
Unfortunately some people are still stuck in the 60s with their old dungers that think they are better than the newer vehicles, their lose really.

Was there a Defender there for him to try this in?

No, but I suspect being driver trainers etc, I at least, would like to think he/they know, or have at least have seen it happen.

I've watched a Puma climb a 45 degree concrete ramp using nothing but anti stall and idle. Probably a 25 metre climb... straight up.
No question a defender would walk straight up this thing.

And to add to that, there's that round looking ramp they use too, and it's a Defender going up that. Can't remember if that's here in Aus or over in the UK somewhere.

It's here, it's been at the LR Expo at Castle Hill a few times, 3 that I know of.

I do not doubt the Defender would be able to climb the 46 degree ramp, I was however questioning his assumption that it would do it in 2nd gear.

Thats one of them that I've seen. And I see that ones a TD5.
XDrive, I do wonder about that, and I also wonder how it would be without TC, which my vehicle doesnt have.
I guess all will be revealed if I get the oportunity to have a go, or even if one of them drives it up and over.

I was always taught to use a higher gear going up than you would use coming down.
Has worked for me for nearly 30 years. If it didn't, I figured it wasn't worth climbing.

Using a higher gear to go up hills as opposed to the lowest gear for going down steep hills is chosen primarily to prevent excessive wheelspin from too much torque in a lower gear. However, if the hill is so steep and 46 degrees is steep, a lower gear could well be the correct choice.
if the ramp is designed correctly and has a high traction surface, then traction control or the lack therof should make no difference to the climbing ability of the vehicle. These ramps are primarily for demonstration purposes.
Your 'rule of thumb' to use a higher gear and then if you cannot get up, find an alternative route, is the better choice. Unfortunately with traction control and other electronic aids on modern vehicles, some drivers who do not have the necessary skills to make these judgements get themselves into situations that can be 'hair-raising' to say the least.

With the gearing in the 6 speed (not the old 5 speed) I would be certain the Defender would walk that ramp in 2nd Low...
DiscoMick
4th June 2015, 03:06 PM
I would try it in 2nd low to see if it worked and to avoid wheelspin. If that didn't work I'd drop down and try again in 1st low.
It just looks scary because it is just a ramp and we fear falling off, but if it was a steep hill it probably wouldn't look as difficult, I reckon.
Main problem I have in those situations is to resist the temptation to push the go pedal too much.
