Hi all

My 87 rangie has a r380 gearbox in it and as of late it's been getting worse with gear changes. Second is the main problem but third is going down the same path. It's only when going up through the gears not down. Is this the synchros or slave cylinder as it runs out of fluid each week and when I fill it up it is smoother.

If I have to rebuild is it worth it or should I just put an auto in. Kinda like the manual

Cheers

Hi all

slave cylinder as it runs out of fluid each week and when I fill it up it is smoother.

There's your problem!!
New master and slave cylinder required.

I only found out last week but have them both on order. Yes very funny about the oil. Wanting to confirm as was told could be synchros but had doubts after the oil.

Cheers guys. Also what best place for parts

If the clutch isn't fully diss-engaging it'll likely crunch 'cos the synchros can't slow the gearbox shafts down with the drivetrain loads still partially applied to them. I'd suggest not driving it like this. If forced to, double clutching would be a lot kinder on the 'box.

Ok it's my only car but will do the double clutching from now.

Here's an idea .... double clutching will probably "pump" the clutch up anyway, so it'll fully dis-engage on the 2nd go either way :)

Top up fluid DAILY, if double clutching does not help just moving the stick a little more slowly between the gears should help.

Every time it grinds, the synchros (and gears themselves) are being damaged, the more you do it the sooner you will have to reco the box.

They have an external clutch slave right? Your not filling the bell housing with oil I hope

Good point!

It is external but if it leaks out the rod seal its going into the clutch housing.

Not meaning to hijack your thread Dan but I'm looking at doing a R380 swap in my `85 and am wondering what pedal box, master and slave you are using?

Would like to know what works and also if I can use the parts I have lined up to do the swap successfully.

How do I fix this now

From what I can see there is nothing out of the ordinary there (or am I missing something?). It is just very, very fiddly to get the rod back in place and clip back on. Real PITA

Ok so is it just a slide back in and seat it or more fiddly then that.

The fiddly bit is getting the plastic clip back in, some use a bit of cotton to pull the hooks in, cutting the cotton when it is in position.

so i got it all back in but still has a grind so i have a master cylinder to replace and see if that works.
